Photographer’s Note
"Riso Amaro" (bitter rice, riz amer), I had some scenes of old italian movies, De Santis, Rossellini, Visconti or De Sica, when I spotted this scene in Pondicherry's veggie market.
Partly due to the theatrical display of these two characters, another part due to the untamed look of the shopkeeper.
Btw, probably worth mentioning italian movie director Rossellini made a striking film about India in the late fifties. Lesser known is that Jean Vautrin, a french writer, was his assistant on the movie : from the 4 years he spent through India from 1952, he shot thousands of BW images, some of his best collected in a photo book titled "J'ai fait un beau voyage". (I had a nice trip)
A dream book illustrated by masterpieces of french writing and top notch Leica M photos. Highly recommended.

Hi Luko,
Very good composition .... you've captured the scene well. Good natural colors and sharpness. But most of all the human subjects are very interesting. Excellent work! tfs

Woh this is absolutely adorable. Apart from the amazing richness of colours/textures, more important to me is the position of the characters that indeed look as if caught in one of the drama scenes. Her expression is priceless...reminded me of Arundhati Roy's novel. Great work.

Hi Luko,
Indeed a nice capture. The pillar in the middle almost breaking the photo into two halves and what different expressions on two sides! One is happy and the other perhaps a bit disturbed and engaged in deep thoughts. You have managed the light very well. Nice colours, typical of Indian markets.

Sayan

Hello Luko. Your color-glad picture consists apparently of two parts: a merry and a thoughtful. It makes joy to regard this wonderful picture. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Bonjour Luko,
This looks like a scene in a play/movie indeed. Great contrast, they seem to be physically together, but emotionally separate. The woman looks happy and contented and the man really down. Interesting how the post seem to be separating them. Good light and textures. I like the raw effect of this image, something so real and unpretentious. This is what i've been trying to study..and capture..there are so many small, unoticed everyday beauty...like in your photo.
Bravo!

It's been a while since I last marked a favorite from you... But finally the day has come and I am in blissing contentment. Indeed a scene from a realist movie. The interaction between the subjects is amazing. It leaves the task of building a plot and I love that. But you color rendition doesn't fall behind. The richness of the blacks in a color photo is intense, amazing. The division of the frame, the light over the vegetables, the colors, the colors... This is a great photograph. Thanks

Dear Luko,
Thank you for your visit as well as for your critiques. This scene really looks like taken out from a movie, especially because of the colors you've used. The composition is very nice - I love the contrast between the woman and the guy. It's like introducing us to two completely different worlds at the same time.
Thanks you for this photo

Hi Luko
the colours are very interesting here, there's a nostalgic, film feel to it...you must've done some clever RAW processing ;) and what a moment here with the contrasting expression. also like your compo with the stark pillar in the middle seperating the two.

Hi Luko,
A very common scene from the Indian market, it can be anywhere - Pondi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai or Delhi. Places where western tourists would get excited but we are used to these daily life patterns would find nothing exciting about it. What's the big deal, I would normally say, its our next door grocer shop. But not on this occasion. Aesthitically, there is something magnetic about this image, I could not ignore, the postioning of the boy and the girl, their body language. Technically, I can see you have pushed up the ISO looking for a steadier speed. I am using 400D myself and love the result you have got in the low light. Excellent work overall.
With Greetings from India

Salut Luko,

Hi Luko,
I like this one very much. The most colorful Pondicherry photo of the series. Her face catches my eye immediately. I love the contrast between the two characters as well. A very rich vivid photo that has so much detail to look at.
Very nice!

Bonsoir Luko! Long time no see.
What a great scene, her face speaks volumes, and indeed it looks like a scene from a movie, also because there's a sort of old 'shine' on her face. He seems to be getting deaf because of her talking to him.
Great background on the shop too.
France' new president worked fast with his cabinet. The only thing that pleads for him, is that he also 'employed' seven women (three Christines, very popular name!) and a socialist. I hope it all turns out better than it looked in the beginning.
Hope you are well, I have seen your uploads from all over this planet lately, but couldn't comment somehow.

Now that you mention, true that we can easily imagine Sofia Loren dressed in her tragic beauty, and the great Marcelo counting his tomatoes out of despair. The colours are beautiful, as it has already been mentioned by many other members. We'd say this is an interior photograph taken on a set with a studio light; every single detail is visible and exposure is top notch. Superb title, even though I wouldn't have minded of E la nave va as a reference to the primitive cinema in its expressionist dimension. A chaos of visual impacts and sounds stimulating our minds.

I really like the right half of the photo, the guy's expression and posture are just great. I have to admit though, the colors/sharpening/PP on the woman bother me. She is too light and it appears that you ahve tried to sharpen to make up for camera shake or subject movement. As much as I would like to just look at the right half, my eyes just keep getting caught by the woman. A slightly wider angle might have also looked nice to me, although not critical.

Cath.

as you know i'm not good with words and being late to comment, it's hard to add to the above critiques... this one's about the colors of course and the (from you)rather unusual pp which resulted in a very painting-like effect.. (do you also find yourself often saturating your shots from india? maybe it's just my new camera...) a 60s/70s painted movie poster was what came to my mind immediately too.. indeed i think we're getting two photos here for the price of one, not only because of the dividing composition and the very opposite expressions of the characters but also two quite different processing of the two people... it's as if the woman is just peeking into reality from a poster on the wall.. anyways an interesting effect, a bit borderline perhaps for me too, i can relate to darren's feelings but i think i still like it overall..

Bonjour, Luko.

bravo.

Hi Luko,
This photo is really cinematographic, as you very well describe. The colors are superb like in old Technicolor movies. What I think it gives the "Italian" mood is the attitude of the little boy, looking down like if he was bored or upset, which envelopes the scene with a more realistic feeling of day life and gives the impression that it is a sequence extracted from one of those old movies. The containers with potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, also give a kind of "Italian" touch to it :)... You really got a great picture here. Congratulations!

Hello Luko,

Man, it's a pity that we only get to see this image in a small size on a small screen. I'd like to see a big version next to a big version of that Dentist shot you took. Too many frigging details in this shot! Nice.

Wonder what the story is between them? This is like a still from a movie. One could at least write a short story based on this one slice of time etched onto silver. You take many great photos and are obviously a pro, yet this is one of the best.
