Photographer’s Note
This is one of the many "Kapellenschulen" (approximately "chapel-school") of my region. These buildings, beginning about 1650, were used weekdays for holding of instructions and on sunday or holidays for church services - see the small clock-tower.
After the institution of these schools and before the compulsory education was established (in Germany generally in 1919!) in summer the school attendance was only a quarter of the attendance in winter. The reason for this was the "natural" child labour at these days, especially in agriculture. In winter children were more "dispensable"...
In the first time the instruction of reading and writing only was based on the bible. The next subject in my region was - singing! Incredible, because mathematics was established as a subject not untill ~ 1800. Mathematics remained second rated for a long time. The subject "fruit growing" was established about 1780!
Nowadays these "Kapellenschulen" in the villages mostly are used for family celebrations, meetings of the local associations and similar events in the village.
The shown "Kapellenschule" insofar is something special, because it has two separate rooms under one roof - the chapel and the school, and it somehow made it's career.
It was removed in it's tiny village Werthenbach and beam by beam rebuilt in the really great and huge open-air museum of Westphalian villages in Detmold. It was somehow touching to see this venerable building far away from my home.
In the workshop you can see another view of it and the tiny school in it.
Using the map view function at the left you can zoom in (please click several times at +) exactly to this tiny building in the large open air-museum which spans the area north-west of it.

Hello Frank,
A good pov on this very appealing chapel against the backdrop of trees. Great colours and clarity and I like the inclusion of the people who bring a sense of vitality. Pity the top is so closely cropped that a small part of the cross is missing.

The roof has that distinct medieval lines they do not do anymore. Your photo shows a well defined structure with good details and exposure.

Bonjour Frank

Hallo Frank,
Thanks to your photo I discover the existence of these chapels - schools, which did not know. This way it is T.E. where we learn many things on other countries.
Your low POV gives a good perspective to this original building, of traditional and very elegant architecture, with its fronts with wood and its roofs of slate, and the people give the dynamical and vital touch to the composition.
Good lighting and beautiful colors, in a great work.
Regards from the warm (20ªC now) and sunny Barcelona.

Bonjour, mon ami Frank,

Dorte.

Hi Frank,
Very interesting notes, telling us so many information about the school system in Germany once.
Beside that, I really like the very low point of view here, as that makes this relatively small building appear rather huge, and that's the feeling I remember well from my early school life.
It is very nice to see the people around as that's very promising for the future of this place.
