Travelogue
The Heroes’ Square is next to the City Park, History museum and there is also nearby ZOO, this is the biggest square in Budapest. On the top of the column is a bronze statue of the Archangel Gabriel, part of the Millennium Monument, erected to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar settlement. At the base of the 36 m high column there are some statues of some of the most remarkable personalities of Hungarian history.
In front of the monument is the tomb of the unknown hero.At both sides of the square there are two museums. On the left the Museum of Fine Arts, which opened its doors in 1906, and has one of the best art collections in the world, with more than 120,000 works. It’s specially remarkable the Spanish Art collection. At right is the the Art Gallery, which is the biggest gallery of Budapest and Hungary, it was opened in 1895. It houses temporary exhibitions.
On the other side square faces Andrassy Avenue which has two buildings looking at the square — one is residential and the other one is the embassy of Serbia (former Yugoslavian embassy where Imre Nagy secured sanctuary in 1956).On the 16th June 1989 a crowd of 250,000 gathered at the square for the historic reburial of Imre Nagy , who had been executed in June 1958.
It is also a station of the yellow M1 (Millennium Underground) line of the Budapest Metro.
This is one of favourite touristic atractions so there is always a lot of people from all over the world here, we met some girls from Hong Kong.
