Photographer’s Note

Designed by Vignola and built in the 16th century for Cardinal Gambara, the Villa Lante was the residence of several popes. It lies north east of Viterbo. The renaissance gardens are noted for their fine terraces, waterfalls and fountains. Many of the fountains were designed to sprinkle visitors without warning as a practical joke.
