Photographer’s Note

Franz Josef Glacier lies at the foot of the western slopes of Mount Cook in South Island, New Zealand. The stillness of the lakes here offers great photographic opportunities. Although so close to the icy mass of the glacier, sub-tropical plants thrive in this high rainfall area of the west coast.
Since this photograph was taken the glacier has been receding.

Hi Peter. Marvellous composition and colours. Very atmospheric and the framing effects of the vegetation on right and left are superb. Could be sharper, though. Or even in better focus. Maybe your camera used a large aperture, reducing depth of field. Obviously a scan, so I make some allowance! I visited NZ about 4 years ago, after a 32 year gap. Only the food had changed, really - much improved on 1971!

I love this picture, the reflection in the water, the beautiful mountains. Very good POV : the plants in the foreground give relief and framework to the picture.

Hello Peter,
This picture has a very good composition. The tree and the plants on the foreground are sharp and give the picture a good sense of depth. Of course the reflection of the snowy mountain in the lake is very beautiful.
