Photographer’s Note
Taken at Transit Camp, where over 100 Torontonians gathered to discuss what they would do to improve the way the TTC (our transit system) market's itself. If you don't have an opinion of what's wrong with the TTC then ya probably ain't from here. Just check out their website for one example [www.toronto.ca/ttc/].
It was held in what seemed like an unheated room in the Gladstone Hotel on Queen St W on what was probably the coldest day of the winter so far. Many participants, including the soundman looking curiously at some guy with a camera, kept bundled up.

I thought of cropping out the door to the left and the white string above him, but decided that I liked the balance other elements provide.

This image was taken with a Nikon D70 (a loaner). My 20D is a mess after shooting for 6 hours during a cold night in and out of a van (shooting a story on the street help outreach vans that feed and cloth homeless). It turns on, but I can't change the ISO, Metering, or activate the display--so can't access the menu.
Needless to say, I am not pleased.

He seems a little cautious about the picture being taken. The contrast of colors in the compo is very good. The red background brings out the darker colours in the guy's clothes. An interesting and simple picture.

Sorry to hear about your cam Alex. Good news is that this is a really good portrait(y) image. I like the patterns on the wall. Your use of the door is very smart. And the main subject is ideally situated. Nice echoes of the colours. His jacket contains the red of the wall and the black of the doorway. I find the darkened corners a little distracting, but that may just be me.
Cheers.

Not good to hear about your 20D. Do you blame the cold/condensation for killing it?
A nice artistic shot of this event, the colours all compliment each other quite well.

Yeah NIKON! Seriously, nice one, Alex, artful, artsy but with guts too. I like the spare compo, the strong, unifying red and the guy's look, not altogether trusting yet interested...
Good one. Post more, buddy!
Best,
Francis

Hello, Alex--
Great work here, holding this one very simple, with a bit of orderly chaos in the door and string. i feel that more than just providing balance, they define the place at which this picture was taken, showing a bit of disorder, things that don't seem to go together all lumped in one place, just like the "unconference". And the man's expression is great, as has been mentioned.
Thanks!

hi Alex,
I like it..I like the white behind him, black sneaking in from the left, strong deep red, tiny white string all in balance...and still all that is seen immediately is his kind of angry eyes..I missed your photos..

Hi Alex,
I still have an African mood... so I like really much this picture.
Red is a good eye catcher, good vignetting.
I like how he's looking at you.

PS : So many of your pictures are under-rated :)
