Photographer’s Note

This photo of the Lusitania monument was taken on a day with high white clouds and brief moments of sun. I was not able to capture this monument with any sunshine, but thought it was worth posting anyway.
On May 7th 1915, during the first World War, the Cunard Liner the Lusitania was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale. Of the nearly 2,000 passengers less than 800 survived and most of these were brought by rescue craft to Cobh. The victims were also landed here and many are interred in the Old Church graveyard near Cobh town. The monument, designed by Jerome O Connor commemorates those who died in the tragedy, it depicts two fisherman who went to the rescue of the ill fated liner. Over them is the Angel of Peace.
