Fossil River Photo

Photographer’s Note

I call this photo Fossil River because of the number of fossils found along the banks of this 14 km river.

It's true name is Manuels River, located Conception Bay South (Newfoundland), or CBS as the locals call it.

The fossils (Trilobites) found in this location date back too 500 million years ago. In the early part of the 20th century, 15,000 specimens where collected in one year by Professor B. F. Howell of Princeton University. It is internationally known and samples can still be found, especially in the lower section.

If you ever get the chance to take a hike along it's banks , as myself and my 2 sons did on this cold December day, enjoy the great views but keep your head down.

I completed a WS due to the comments regarding sharpness. Hope this is better, any comments would be appreciated.

Rodney,
Nice photo with an interesting note. The photo seems to be a little overexposed or oversharpened, making it a little hard on the eyes.
Excellent composition and POV.

This is a very nice composition with a good pov. Colours are also very good but, like Asa, I fear it is somewhat oversharpened, which is a pity as it spoils what is otherwsie a very nice picture.

This is an interesting photo, a great mix of different tones of colour.
The overall composition seems to work, but it seems the photo has been sharpened too much as the detail is simply overwhelming.

You have done your WS well, the saturation of colour that golden colour of the flowing water is beautiful and the sky colour just looks great

I think I prefer the original... not to take anything away from your WS mind (which would look great printed on canvas effect paper) but I feel the sharpness of the orig enhances the depth. But who am I to critisize... call me two dollars.
Another really interesting note.

Special view Rodney, the light on the water have something different, excellent contrast with the trees and the beautiful blue sky, well seen !

Nice shot Rodney! Despite having been to Newfoundland twice so far, I've never really paid too much attention to the geology of the place; other than to note places like Gros Morne were glacial/fjord, and it was mostly igneous. Your note and profile have changed that, so when I go back again this year I'll be looking at it with fresh eyes. Of course whether I'll be able to find any geology through the weather should be an interesting question ;)

Image quality wise; the original version is oversharpened IMO, the Workshop shows some odd smoothing though (particularly in the trees on the right at the back), how does the original look? Of the two I prefer the WS.

I really love the way you've captured the golden tones of the water, it almost looks like a river of Champagne here :)
