Photographer’s Note
On the north coast of Faial, there is alighthouse that no longer lights. The only reason for this is that one day, in the 1950s, a small volcano sprouted up right in front of it. The island, Capelinhos arupted and formed what was at first a small island but eventually it joined the land, adding 2.5km squared to the islands landmass. And of course, they needed a new light house because the ships could no longer see the old one.

No doubt it is the same lighthouse, but I notice a few differences from my 1988 picture.
