Photographer’s Note

North along tree-lined Soseaua Kiseleff is the Triumphal arch. Based on Paris' namesake monument, it was a symbol of cultural ties prior to WWI.
The 11m-tall arch, constructed from reinforced concrete, and granite mined in Deva, was built between 1935-36 to commemorate the reunification of Romania in 1918.
The sites of the WWI battles in which the Romanian front fought are inscribed inside the arch, and King Ferdinand and Queen Marie feature on its southern facade. A makeshift triumphal monument allegedly made from cardboard and wood had been erected on the site in 1878 to mark the achievement of Romanian independence the previous year. In 1922 a new wooden structure was hastily thrown up in time for King Ferdinand's triumphant entry into the city as the first king os a united Greater Romania.

Hope you like that.
