Photographer’s Note

while in laos i went kayaking with my friends. we stopped for lunch near some rapids.

another group also stopped for lunch there. they were a german family: mother, father and two daughters.

immediately after arriving, both girls stripped of to their swimmers and suntanned on the warm rocks. i sereptitiously took photos while my friends distracted the father with talks of adventures in laos.

here the younger sister is about to sit and enjoy the sun ... i was going to post a picture of her bum, but i thought that might be a bit cheeky! ;)

Brilliant, David. let me explain - I love that yu took this shot which could be anywhere! When in Laos we're busy stalking those poor monks performing the alms i the am, hanging out in the Hmong Market at dusk not buying a dman thing but we rarely shoot the tourists (I did oncein LUnag Prabang, a thing called "be here now" - it's in my first page...
Anyway very nice shot with all the above bagage making it even mre appealing for me.

J'adore le cadrage, c'est parfait.
La lumière est très forte mais bien gérée et le pdv en légère contre plongé donne du punch.
Le ciel clair laisse bien ressortir cette très belle fille.

Theres an exhibition outsode of the Sejong center in Seoul of photography. Anyway. while all the great photogs were taking the great photos of great views, of monks, of herat wrenching scene, Martin Parr's were of tourists doing stupid, ordinary, banal things. And guess whose shots I remember most? Yeah, Parr's. He sort of turns photography on its head, you know? The banal in his shots is more memorable than the fantastic, moving photos. Why? because he is original. And here. Laos, all the photos you could take in the vilages, of the poor and the monks and the markets..you take a shot like this. I congratulate you on this.

Well being a male I guess I am attracted to this photo for obvious reasons, but I am also attracted to the style behind the shot. It is like the forbidden shot, of an innocent girl with her father who is supposed to protect her. Nicely done.

Dave nice shot. Good use of light and your favorite background. A dfferent view of Loa but one that would really sum up Vang Vieng, tourists on the river. Well done.

Hi David,
She is beautiful. And well fraked leaving room to the direction of her look. And low angle works well.
I also read yours and Rafal's discussion with interest. We all know that there's monks in Laos. But this tells much about progress in tourist industry there.
One more thing: I bet you wouldn't dare to take this one on a much praised 50mm lens!

The framing is just perfect, ok, the picture is composed by just a nice woman and a perfect blue sky, but the way you have placed the subject gives so much impact here.

Magnifique cette photo. La lumière est superbe.
J'aime beaucoup le cadrage vers la gauche qui laisse de la place pour la vision de la jeune fille. de plus, Le ciel est magnifique.

Hey, who needs monks and rice paddies? Been there, done that! And I think it does contribute to "learning more about the world through photography", because it shows that some people don't respect local customs of modest dress when they're traveling. (That WAS your purpose in this shot, right?) Now hopefully the father doesn't look at TE, or I'd suggest going into hiding. Regards, Ken.

Good colors, excellent cadrage, "less is more" and "never center you subject" are perfectly illustrated here;
P.S. Its a very distinct part of Laos you captured here, "Super-Dave". I wouldve never guessed personally... :)
