Photographer’s Note

Under a milky sky, early morning on the beach of Koh Lipe : families go riding their mopeds while the only monk of the island starts his alm tour. He will stop at the few remaining buddhist houses, nothing like the glorious march of Luang Prabang.

Koh Lipe is populated with Chao Le sea gypsies, an animist tribe coming from the northern tip of Sumatra. Hence religion frenzy hasn't reached up to the island, in a muslim surrounding : like the most of southern Thailand and Malaysia, which is only 10 miles far.

Fishing, drinking and looking at the flat seas occupy the Chao Le for the great part. Youngsters are looking closely any substance that can make them forget they're secluded on a small island, far away from both Babylon and Jamaica.
Funnily enough the Christian revival is pushed forward by the young gay and transvestite community, which also promotes the full moon party.

Koh lipe is a land of paradox, but everybody goes his own way.

Such a happy image Luko, happy monk walking across, happy man and child on a moped going for a ride, love the diagonal composition, even the robes from the boats link monk/rider/boats all together. The birghness of the images helps with the uplifting mood of the scenery, looks like after the darkest image you ever posted few days ago it was time to balance it off wit the brightest.
Like the play of colours, strong orange and fairly dark boats against bright sand/water/sky.
I find that this image has more painting like qualities than just about any other image of yours I have seen, I don't know if you have used different processing than usually or what, but it has the painting feeling to it (nothing wrong with that, it's not overdone in any sense and very tastefull).

What a heck is wrong with the thumb on his right foot? Is this how monks show excitement?;-)

Hi Luko,
strong picture. The people are getting off of the background. It's like a collage.
The expession of the monk is priceless.
I like the fsct that the girl on the motorcycle is looking at the monk, so there is some interaction.

Your note, especially the last bit, cannot help reminding me of Houellebecq. Must be a very eclectic spot, for sure. Your shot is nearly surreal in its feel: the orange robed old monk, THE monk of the island, staring out on his alms tour with the motorbike guy and his child heading the other way. But all this is not enough. The setting, this talcum powderish soft sand and quiet body of water behind with the occasional little boats make the shot wrapped in a dreamlike cloth, velvety.

Amazing photo, Luko! Three layers of reality, wonderfully juxtaposed. The monk is in his own world, prodding along; the modern motorbike-family in the middle; the timeless boats on the sea. The color is wonderfully luminous. The direction of movement of the three subjects are placed just right. A slice of time, a decisive moment.
My only quibble here is that the head of the man on the bike could have been just a bit nearer the center of the frame, clearing the boat...but you get what you get. Top class composition.

Ma i ère impression est celle d'une image de BD.
ça n'est pas péjoratif au contraire, je trouve qu'il y a une compo typique BD, les personnages typés également pour les caractériser,et un gommage de la profondeur pour tout mettre sur un même plan.
L'arrivée du moine dans le cadre laisse supposer une suite d'images déroulant le fil de l'histoire...

PS :merci pour le commentaire sur "duet and trio"; j'ai quand même eu une déception au sujet de cette photo;si j'ai bien compris les commentaires , bcp ont cru que le trio était stationnaire, en fait, non, je m'étais posté à cet endroit pensant qu'il était propice à des opportunités photo.
J'ai donc déclenché au moment ou le trio passait la chicane en granit tandis que le duo arrivait.
Mais effectivement, on pourrait croire qu'elles sont là, à l'arrêt; donc un peu raté, le mouvement devrait être évident, je pense que tu l'as perçu ce mouvement mais ça aurait dû être le cas de tout le monde.

wow, this postprocessing made wonders here. Together with great, slightly surreal moment the whole looks just as painting (as it was already mentioned, but it was my first idea when I saw this picture).
The key point of this picture is of course the monk. I especially like the perspective effect that makes him look much bigger than the rest of the objects (the distance between him and motorcycle seems to be smaller than it must be in real).

Your high contrast stage is nice to see. I prefer it to the very dark one from yesterday. The colors here are great, the quirky compo too. The toe, Im glad Im not the only one to have noticed.

P.S. You have to answer me this. Why dont you put your great shots on PBAse? The underwater stuff really doesnt do it for me. You have so many great photos on TE and Im sure many more elsewhere that its a shame you dont make an awesome PBase gallery.

j'arrive ici, et comme d'habitude toujours des images réfléchies ... un contraste saisissant entre les tons un peu palots et ce moine orange qui ressort fortement ... une belle mise en évidence
le détail ici qui m'attire est cet orteil qui pointe vers le ciel :)

very good image. complex composition, fantastic 'pose' of the monk - that raised toe is so funny. lovely colors - almost monochrome with some orange. two small things - crooked horizon and the head of the biker touching the boats, the rest is great.

Is it a road or a beach? I like the monk in a hurry - funny.. I would level the photo but I know it would break the composition because the monk figure is very close to the frame. I like this shot.

Superb. I absolutely love this shot... from the thumbnail I thought it was something you had Photoshopped together. You will have seen the South East Asia on a Shoestring book by Lonely Planet... this is what your photo reminded me of.
But this is far better. It is real! You are so lucky to have seen such a beautiful scene, and to have captured it so expertly... wow.
I also like the PP you have done... it gives it a slightly surreal feel, which works well.

Hi Luko. An interesting shot, to me it looks like an empty beach scene, just with the boats in the water, then, like a collage, a motorbike was added and then a monk was thrown in there too, just to make this whitish canvas seem surreal, with these 2 elements that feel out of place. That is what i like about it, the strange surreal feel that i get from it. An excellent composition, working the 3rds so well, in each vertically and horizontally. Well done.

Tout en contraste cette photo, ce blanc, la couleur de la tunique, l'orteil levé ! bref, une foule de détail que l'on ne voit pas tout de suite.

Le gros doigt du pouce en l'air (comme pour la main), c'est une technique ancestrale pour te signifier qu'il t'a bien vu et qu'il est d'accord pour la photo ;o).

J'aime bien cette compo multi-couche avec cette diagomale qui part du bonze dont la couleur de la tunique contraste avec le reste des tons.

Interessant au niveau de la lumière, on a une impression d'éclairage artificiel ou studio avec les reflecteurs. vec cette lumière, je regrette juste le manque de trace de la mobilette sur le sable qui aurait donner plus de dynamique et aurait cassé cette diagonale. Sans ces traces, j'ai l'impression que la moto est venu de nul part et est apparu soudainement avec une impression de temps suspendu ...

Et enfin pour chipotter ;o) ... le timing de la moto, sans doute 1s ou 1/2s (cela depend de la vitesse de la moto) trop tot pour l'avoir légérement entre les 2 bateaux et pour remplir cette espace vide à gauche en bas.

Absolutely LOVE the title first of all (very Dylan...) but the intensity of purpose of the old monk detached against the almost surex background, and then the bike coming from the ipostie direction, with the quiet boats behind...beautiful image, sets one dreaming...

Cette composition est un mélange bizarre avec de différentes modes de transport avec le moine qui se promène sur la plage. Les robes du moine ajoutent beaucoup de couleur et j'aime beaucoup sa position à droite de l'image qui donne un certain dynanisme. Seul regret, l'horizon qui penche.

Moi je dis qu'Hervé n'a pas tort. Je te vois bien derrière ta cravate, assis au bureau et, subrepticement pour que le boss ne se rende compte de rien, une paire de ciseaux de couturière à la main, faire des découpages de plusieurs images pour ensuite nous faire croire que tu es un artiste. C'est un collage...bien fait mais, un collage. Et je dirais encore que ce n'est qu'un collage! D'ailleurs son orteil le montre bien: tu as greffé un index sur le pied du moine, et un orteil sur sa main gauche. Le secret c'est que l'un pointe vers l'autre. Je t'ai eu, sale gamin!

ps: tu as remarqué que ta "copine" Cedar est de retour?

j'aime bcp cette image, car je la trouve un peu fouillis, comment dire, un bazar de brocanteur ou une foire à tous : des vieilles barques, un cata, un moine et une moto ... on dirait un film ... j'aime bien cette diversité (tiens j'ai trouve le bon mot !)
Et cette touche orange, tout comme le mouvement de la moto apportent de la vie ...

etrange photo. Le moine attire bien sur le regard avec en plus son orteil relevé mais je suis rsté fixé sur lui, comme trop evident. En revoyant la photo après la note (merci pour cette dernière - un plaisir à lire) j'ai pu apprecier le reste et la logique du titre. En fait le seul problème ici est que la moto ne soit pas 2 - 3 metres en arrière...

Salut Luko.
Un peu moins présent sur TE, donc du retard dans les images. Je tenais quand même à venir noter celle-ci. J'adore ce côté très clair qui fait ressortir les sujets.
Tout est bien positionné et j'aime bien ces 3 types de transports, (la marche, la moto et les bateaux) qui se retrouvent sur cette plage.
Pis juste pour déconner....excellent la poisition du pied ;)

Very different from your last post but equally good. Love the way all the parts of the image really stand out against that very milky sky and the coral white sand. Great to see the traditional monk living his life one way being compared to the family man living his im sure very differently. Super stuff.

Bonjour Luko!

C'est vrai quelle est fascinante cette photo! Je ne trouve aucun autre mot pour exprimer ma première impression. Et je comprends les discussions qu'elle suscite. Cet "irréalisme" dans la composition, ces formes colorées si nettement "découpées" et qui ont l'air de "flotter" sur le fond laiteux du paysage. Il y a une immense profondeur suggérée par les divers éléments et en même temps l'arrière-plan reste plat et dépouillé, presque aucune texture sur le sable, l'eau ou le ciel à découvrir.

La seule explication reste qu'il fallait que Luko soit là au moment idéal... Et il y était, et ça ne me surprend pas du tout! N'est pas donné à chacun de savoir jouer de sa caméra de façon à berner tout le monde, bravo! :o)))

* En fait, cette image me fait penser à un petit travail de bricolage que je faisais souvent à l'école de ma fille. On découpait des silhouettes de divers personnages et éléments, et on les collait sur le fond d'une boîte à chaussures en carton. Puis on enlevait une grande partie du couvercle pour la remplacer par un papier de soie jaune ou orangé. Et finalement on faisait juste un petit trou sur le devant de la boîte et les enfants allaient de maison à maison pour faire admirer leur "kijkdoos" [litt: boîte à regarder] en espérant recevoir un "kwartje" ou "dubbeltje" [quart de florin ou 10cents]! :o)

Première visite sur ton site et je découvre de l'art,de la versatilité et beaucoup d'enseignement.
À regarder,je vois une composition en diagonale qui contient beaucoup d'éléments,qui nous donnent des éléments de la vie en Thailande.
le tout dans une atmosphère quasi monochrome avec en contraste la robe saffran du moine,qui est l'élément principal.
J'ai vraiement beaucoup à apprendre.
je vais donc revenir.

This is a really strange shot Luko, and I don't mean that in a bad way. The inclusion of the monk, the boats and the water adn the family on the moped just don't seem to blend together, which is why this shot works of course. Actually, it all seems so damned incongruous that my fist thought is that this had been Photoshopped. Two things make this a little less than perfect. First, the lighting here is nothing special. It looks like you took this just a little too late in the morning. Secondly, the longtail boat in the center is kind of interfering with the father/child on the moped. Both of these are more than offset though by the really great set of elements that you caught. Another big plus is the almost perfect diagonal created bye the monk, moped and longtail. Nice shot Luko, I really like this one.

Hi Luko, from your shots I've always something to learn, as in this high-key one. Also geometry is impressive to me, with a great use of different plans.

I like this milky atmosphere you have captured. The monk and its orange robe was a nice touch, could not help noticing his toe sticking up. Although the shot is predominantly white there are many other not so prominant colors that complemented the picture. e.g the rear gold wheel of the bike and the fluorescent green flag on one of the boats.
