Photographer’s Note

Ladies from slums - poor but very elegant.

When people in Poland ask me about India, one of the strongest belief is that it's terribly dirty country. Well, indeed it is. But contrary to some expectations, people aren't dirty at all. Even if they live in terrible conditions, they keep themselves very clean, performing ablutions few times a day.
A little known fact is that the habit of everyday cleaning Europeans owe to Indians - in early XIXth century Englishmen brought it from their colony to the Old Continent, where people used to bath once in a month.
