Photographer’s Note
Some place outside Bangkok's amulet market. thsis is a common sight to spot someone checking his newly acquired amulet with a loupe. Is it powerful enough to cast away bad fortunes and attract a better luck?
The amulet market is one of the places I often go back in Bangkok. This is where the supertitious side of the thai soul is at peak level, something that might be totally odd to us cartesian souls. It is said that the amulet market attracts people prone to live through hazardous environments, be it professionally or...
At least, you'll be sure to spot some quite typical characters down there. Next time in Bangkok, have a go, if you don't know it already.

That's somewhat strange - I wrote as soon as this one came on-line but it seems my words never reached the great TE controller in the ether!.
Well to cut it short now - I love the different textures the stone/concrete, the paper, the creased shirt - the guy's skin - his posture is fantastic and your toning hits the same mark - it's a really interesting choice of framing which I think is just brilliant!
Got to go to bed right now!!! Seriously!
I remember - i also thought his amulet examination has given him a kind of immortality already - in your picture. Nice work mate!
best wishes Kev

hey luko. great shot. i like the framing, including the second unused seat to keep the subject in thirds, and the background is fantastic.
black and white makes for a nice composition. i'm interested to know if you used a high iso or if you made the shot grainy in post production. but it's a great effect.
the only criticism i would have is the angle of the shot. i'd like to see this done from a lower angle if possible. the pov would be more interesting and we'd see more of the subjects face if you got down lower. there'd also be more background.
otherwise, wonderful shot. keep shooting!!

Hello Luko,
This is great composition; the second seat is balancing the right side of the picture. The texture in the background is looking great in B/W, for me the POV is right as a lower POV will not help much to show the face of this man because of the hands.

For not finding a better word to describe it, may I use the cliche "masterpiece"...you have caught the moment with acute precision: with the vein on his thin-skinned temple, the amulet held so close between his bony, restless thumb and index finger, the feet that have walked many miles in similar flipflops no doubt... and all this in front of that knockout wall with the remnants of posters that have been decayed. Also, the man is seated pleasingly off-centre... the whole work testifies to both your sensitivity and your technical virtuosity. The devil's photographer! :-)
Really, superb, Luko. How many exhibitons do you have lined up?

a good composition, with the empty stool, the man... so involved in his purchases and the great textures behind him... topped off with a great b/w with nice contrast. nice work.

amicalement, michel

Very nicely balanced shot, inspired title and excellent story (top notch TE stuff).
As to the f5.6 here, (just a suggestion though, ok?) I personally might have opened up a little more, like f2.8 say, to "detach" the fellow more firmly from the wall and isolate him more in his search. Then again that is probably just a reflection of my heavy-handedness with bokeh...
But this is a matter of choice, and you made yours, so fine...

Hi Luko!
The gay on photo gives me feeling that he is here just for composition. For my taste, the wall behind is interesting. So many scratches and lines.Beautiful.

Hello Luko

this one is nice as well, very simple scne, but the moment is good. I'd like to have sth more here, not sure what, just anything. but one thing that i thnk would improve the photo is a lower POV - you shoud have squatted down I think, now we are looking at him from above, which somehow I don't like much. a good photo

well, it's hard for me to add anything (original), especially since i've read the vey educational thread with maciej and francis. my first thought was also that perhaps a smaller aperture would have better isolated your subject. love everything else though, good compo, the silvery tones and textures are awesome. never heard of this market before, i may be back there in a month, i'll make sure i visit.

Of course, I like the way your photographs always tell so many different stories, in the sense they stimulate the imagination of each viewer, who is “asked” to decode the symbols and clues either in the photo’s context or that call for each one’s souvenirs or cultural references. But apart from the fact that I’ve made my own story from your photograph, the reason why I love to read your notes is because they allow us to enter in your subjective field of view, hence learn also something about the link between the photographed scene and the man behind the viewfinder.
This time I’ve found what I was looking for in your answer to Maciek, rather than in your note, and I think it is invaluable as a lesson of photography. I like your image before I “knew”, and now that I “know”, I like the story it tells. And the reason I like it so much is because, as a storyteller, your surpass my imagination hence the interpretation I could make of it.
The overall atmosphere reminds me some of your Hong Kong scenes photographed in B&W.

Salut Luko,
Merci, Alain -
Darren

Nice shot Luko. Tones are great, you can't beat real b&w. I love these guys too, I have taken my share of shots of them. I like most everything here, with one small exception. For some reason, I am bothered by the line at the bottom running parallel to the bottom of the frame. I dunno why, but it catches my eye more than it should. A tighter crop at the bottom would work for me. I think Maciek might also be right about a lower POV being more desirable. Nice shot Luko, hope all is well.

Bonjour Luko.
I can easily imagine, when you'll have become a "very famous photographer", that especially this picture will be shown over & over, just like "Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare"... :o)
A wonderfully well framed photo with a perfect grainy effect to make it a timeless and very attractive picture. Just love it!

I paid my first visit to the amulet market recently and this is such a good capture of it. The business of examination was really such an interesting thing to watch. Well captured representation of what's going on there.

hello Luko
on s'interroge, on détaille, on admire ...
bravo Luko, grande classe ...
A bientôt
