Photographer’s Note

Kyoto's Gion district is a center for nightlife and geishas. There are expensive restaurants, clubs and Kabuki theater. One can see plentiful traditional Japanese wood architecture. A walk through the streets really gives the feeling one has entered old traditional Japan. Through an open doorway or window one may spot a geisha or maiko (geisha apprentice) being prepared for the evening's work--it looks like the makeup room on a movie set, with multiple attendants applying precise makeup and clothing touches.
