Photographer’s Note
So many to choose from, with every outfit a different color. Proudly made in Brazil, exported to all kinds of countries. I'm wearing a pair now, (though I bought mine in Sao Paulo of course), those bright orange ones that you can see behind the man, the cheeper ones without the Brazilian flag. I also bought the blue ones that he is looking at, they have the flag on it, and are the best quality you can get.
Taken in a supermarket in Sao Paulo, where Isabel and I had a lot of fun, a bit of camerashake, as we were not allowed to shoot, I get nervous ;-). Well, Isabel couldn't shoot, she left the CF card at home ;-).
Here are some figures on havaianas, with many thanks to Elena.
And check out their cool website:
5 pairs a second,
210 million sandals per year.
2,2 billion pairs made and sold since they started operating in 1962.
All size 37 in a line would circle the globe 50 times.
Every 3 Brazilians, 2 of them buy 1 pair of havaianas per year!!
price ranging from (in Brazil of course):
U$2 at any supermarket here, basic 1 color, rainbow of colors to chose from...
U$4-10 for newer models, models with special features like combination of colors, thicker sole ...
U$100 at Galleries Lafayette in Paris embroidered with plastic beads
U$4000 white sandals embroidered with gold,
U$22,000 black sandals embroidered with gold and diamonds, these last two sold by the very well known brazilian jeweller H.S.Stern.

I open up my computer and I am flooded with colour this morning. (check kev's post)
I'm glad we are back to Brazil, but not what i expected. Interesting note, I wonder how much the workers get paid to make them?
he looks so deep in thought, and indecisive, go on buy two pair!

Hi Rinie,
Wow! This is a cool shot! I love the vibrant colours here. That's incredible what you wrote in your note. Imagine paying U$22,000 for a pair of sandals...wow.
Well seen and composed!

I love this one Rinie, the symmetry of the slipers, the colors, and the note... What a note! You have nothing to envy to some NG photographer, this is my opinion and I´m not going to argue with you about it :-) Take care.

I have the plain blue ones (like this garoto is buying), I use them for shower sandles when i'm traveling. Love all the colors and the note is great.

Ahhh, Havaianas, a shop like that is like a candy shop, well it looks like it anyway, and I have a secret addiction to colourful flip flops, I do have my fair share of havaianas, my favorites are yellow, with the flag. Surprised at the price list you have in your note, wow!
This is the kind of shot you could have done just for the colours, without the man, but it would have been far less interesting and it shows how good and confindent your getting when it comes to shooting people ;o)
This tuesday i have a trip planned, where I promise I will bring home some nice people pictures and post some here... I am coming back..

Very fine diagonal Havaianas-graphism here Rinie :-), I love the strong rhythm, a feast of colours and curved forms. The guy with the bald head, indeed in deep thought, is ofcourse a must. And wow the mind boggles pondering these figures. Lovely.
Selemat tidoer for later.

Hi Rinie
Superb use of repetition & color. The man adds scale & context. Good work!

Hi Rinie,
lots of color! I like that a lot. Good variation in the color background. Maybe if you had a more perpendicular POV on him to avoid that thing in the foreground and simolify the compo to maximize the impact of the color? But as we know sometimes we must shoot fast to catch that moment or its gone. Good job Rinie.

Interesting shot Rinie, with a REALLY interesting story about this company....
Shame they don't let you take photo's... If I encounter that situation- I just pretend I don't speak English (or in this case portugese) hahaha.
I'm just as guilty of neglecting your shots- no worries.
Hope your doing well!
- Dan
P.S.- kind of a plain frame- don't you think? ;-)

Isabel may leave her card at home sometimes but she sure makes a mean crop - this is exactly what I was going to do but she beat me too it - amazing facts!!!

Ha, So colorful.
So which one you bought, Rinie? I hope you didn't chose the 22'000 usd one.
A great collection, and a very nice catch.

Hi Rinie!
This photo makes me remember the summer.
The rain arrives at Portugal and we are needing it... but I miss summer, to be able to put my Havaianas and go to the beach ;) I don't like rain.
Lovely composition and great colors! Well done ;)
Take care,
Susana

I really like commercial scenes. Scenes in stores are always interesting because of the variety of things that are in stores and all the people. I once went shutter crazy in a Home Depot, a home improvement store. The huge shelves, all the power tools and hardware and everything had such graphic appeal. And this has a good graphic appeal, too. The colors and rows are great. And the person is in a spot and posture that engages the viewer to look at the wall. The only thing is the camera shake as you already are aware of, obviously. It's places like this where a small camera without a shutter comes in handy so you can sneak shots without them knowing any better. :)

Hi Rinie,
Fun pic and great note!
The guy looks like a store dummy, btw; just look at his head bathing in that yellow glow!
Nice shot,
Raluca
