Photographer’s Note

As I was writing in the profile of my previous post, Viktualienmarkt in the center of Munich is a tourist magnet. The place has nevertheless preserved a certain authenticity, and many locals mix among the tourists. Sounds weird, doesn't it, one would expect the tourists to mix among the locals... But Munich is likely the most international city in Germany.
Watching these gentlemen enjoying a beer in traditional Bavarian costumes, it crossed my mind that they could be on the pay lists of the municipality of Munich. Plenty of tradition appeals to tourists. Probably I was wrong though, Bavarians are very attached to their costumes.
The most spectacular piece is definitely the bundle of hair on the hat, the "Gamsbart", which means "Goat's beard". It is actually the shoulder hair of the chamois, and it supposingly costs these days many hundred euros. I actually thought it comes from the wild boar, but it doesn’t.
This one picture goes for Francis (Furachan) who complained that images of Europeans and North Americans are underrepresented on TE.
