Photographer’s Note

Perugia is the capital of Umbria and is a magnificent and ancient hilltop town. As the artistic center of Umbria the city is filled with dynamic medieval architecture, including the Palazzo dei Priori, the well-preserved marble Fontana Maggiore, and the church of San Lorenzo. An underground labyrinth of ancient streets, usued originally as a market, exists at the southern end of the walled city and parts of it have been converted using escalators into the formal public entranceway to the city center (because of the steep incline, it's actually easier to go underground and come up into the middle of the city than it is to climb up the hill!)

There is also a well-established University for Foreigners in Perugia. Founded in 1308, the University brings young students from all over the world to the relatively small historical center of this classical Italian town, turning it into the ultimate 'college town' in Italy. After classes, students can be seen lounging on the steps of San Lorenzo chatting, meeting friends, drinking a cold beer, kissing and even sleeping. The presence of the University means there are a large number of hip clothing stores, intelligent book shops, and quaint cafes, and the relaxed but cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city rivals that of even Florence. Perugia certainly takes the cake as one of my favorite cities I visited and it would be a joy to study there.

Thanks a million to pamastro for the recommendation!!
