Photographer’s Note
During our stay in Lombok we visited the covered market of Sweta, the most important one on the isle of Lombok. In this third posting of the Indonesia mini-series a Sweta tobacconist is displayed. The tobacco spread out on his table produced a lovely smell and looked great. After we showed interest the tobacconist rolled us a cigarette, kept together by a thin thread, and it was a fine smoke. So we ordered 250 gr. He looks sophisticated and with definite professional pride while working with the tobacco.
Working on old photos is a delight. They get a new life, you discover new details and while editing them dear memories roll in. In the case of the Indonesia pics I also couldn’t help thinking about the things that happened in Indonesia the last 10 years.
We visited Lombok in 1995 while the government of Suharto was still in place. In this period it was already changing rapidly because of the tourism development scheme of this government, which displaced the small scale local providers of tourist services by large investors from outside the island. During our stay there we heard sad tales about it. For instance the houses and small apartments of Gili Air (a small isle a few miles from the Lombok coast) were razed two times in a row to get the inhabitants to leave and make place for the investors. In 1997 there were demonstrations about the economic and political situation and after that the island had to endure the social-political crisis which rocked Indonesia violently in the late nineties and the beginning of the new millennium. The level of integration amongst the various ethnic/faith groups of the island was lowered due to this and the tourist trade has still a very hard time to recover.
The postings of this mini series are all scanned from photos with my Epson 2450 photo scanner, at 800 dpi for decent PP-headroom.
PCS: Desaturated, adjusted levels, curves & contrast, ran Noiseware, USM-ed, added a frame, saved for the web.

Hi Bert, great note! I like to hear that good memories come up by means of pictures. Also the sad things that happened in Indonesia, which were devastating for tourism, from which a lot of people get there income, is a good reminder in your note (Hmm, bad sentence, do you get what I mean?)
Nice picture, Bert, of that man working, the DoF is excellent, and his smile is great. I like his hands, with, of course, the long nail on the little finger, just to show that you don't have to do hard, physical labour.
Enjoy your day!

Excellent note to go along with this portrait picturing a typical manufacture work. I would have preferred to see a bit more contrast, because the range of greys seem a bit dull. Anyhow, well composed and the scene shows us an explicit context. Good work.

Goede middag Bert,
John

I'm not a smoker, but I can see a lot of charm and interest in this scene of the working tobacconist. The focus and enjoying dedication with which he goes about his job are well conveyed in this photo, and the background works great to provide context in a non-distracting way. Looks again very good in b&w. A very meaningful and thought-provoking note coming with this one. Well done, Bert.

Looks like you did a good job working with the old photo. I like the lines and softness in the background. I also like the "sophisticated" look of the man (I also thought that word looking at him). :o)

Hallo Bert,
This become a real Travelogue. Though I wouldn't probably choose it myself, I think B&W is very appropriate for this documentary. I’m curious at the continuation.

Yes Bert, I laso like to remember to moments and emotions when looking at some old shots, and a real delight to work on them. I'm glad you choose this one, as I'm a heavy smoker...;o), true. moreover I worked during 7 years by a well known tobacco-cigarettes manufacturer, so I can imagine the lovely smell. I like the compo, his smile and concentration are great. A very fine catch to sahre and a good b&w choice in that case. Thanks.
