Larache położone jest ok. 40 km na południe od Asilah. Miasto zostało założone przez merynidzkiego sułtana Jusfa ben Alego w 1258r.
Strategicznemu znaczeniu miasta nadaje położenie nad Atlantykiem z naturalnym portem.
