thinking of the Blair Witch Photo

Photographer’s Note

the last few months I have spent mostly thinking and reading about photography, while my camera quietly gathered dust. I cannot say I am completely transformed right now, but I think I have a little more courage to explore things I might like. and lately I have developed a taste for out of focus abstracts, so last weekend I spent some happy hours swinging my camera left and right in an attempt to have that perfect abstraction. Wendell State Forest was the perfect location for my experiments - moss covered trees glowing softly in sunlight, all kinds of plants offering endless variety of textures, big pond full of waterlillies.

about the photo: the image is straight out of the camera, no adjustments apart from converting from RAW, resizing and adding the frame. I was after a mood, a feeling, forgetting about technicalities.

Hi Kristine,

what a change! You can notice my different tastes for photography in my gallery so I really appreciate when the others try something different too. At the first sight I thought it was a hard post-processing but now I see it's just a great play with the movement and settings. I like this a lot!

Hello Kristine! I want to swing too instead I am still forced to sit on my chair :))) I can FEEL the forest, I really honestly do. Sometimes, when you walk in the forest, you can see some sunlight here and there beaming down into the forest and when you turn your head this is how it looks. Okay I don't turn that fast but similar. Love your play!!! I was just thinking how fast the year went, it seems not long ago when you were in VT and now the leaves change again when I look outside, just a little but you can see a difference, it is no longer green-green. Happy weekend, sorting out your vacation pictures ... maybe ... or playing in the woods again ... Barbara.

Haha! Kristine! The title is very well chosen! I love the idea, the blur, with the small lines like touches of painting, and the front green trunk like an apparition in the flashlight of a tourist stray and panicked in the forest. Good job!

Hi Kristine,
I admire the way with which you enter in the abstraction. It is for me a very difficult initiative, but I like looking at what the others make!
It is true that the forest is a very good subject. I like very much the contrast of the green trunk and all these small spots playing with the light which give a beautiful vibration to the image and bring a nice dynamism. It is really a very beautiful search. It is necessary to continue!

I like the abstract blur and your thinking - putting all the technicality out of it and just seeing what happens. It's a unique and successful shot. And very spooky too. I just wish I had the courage to try something like this. I thought I was being brave when I posted the biome roofs of the Eden Project. Trouble is I have no parameters for judging such a shot, when it's my own. When looking at someone else's you can either like it or hate it, but with your own, there is too much emotional attachment to be objective.
I really like this...however I have no idea why! Respect for not caring a damn what others might think!

Good to see you posting after awhile. I douldn't say I love it, but as you say, it's an experimentation and exploring your creativity. That is perfectly fine. I do like the texture of it, Like a vertical brush stroke patter which I use often in oil painting.
Since you gave it that title it's kind of hard to see it otherwise. It does it give you an spooking feeling of running in the dark forest. Hope you find what you trying to achieve. Thanks

It looks almost like a Photoshop effect, Kristine, but apparently it's not! Anyway, it's hard to do much original in the woods (well, for me), but you found a way, I have to admire that. The bright spots are scattered through the frame in a harmonious way, and the colors fit together well, too. Nice! Regards, Ken.

Hi Kristine,
The title, Blair Witch Project, invokes fear; however, I knew little about it. When I did some research, I can see the stick figures in your spooky composition.

When you have captured fantastic landscapes in exotic locations, I can see that you might be seeking new challenges to tide you over. This certainly is an interesting new direction; I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
