Souk des babouches Photo

Photographer’s Note

First sorry for the low quality of this photo taken without tripod in a "c'mon hurry click click" situation, I post it for its TE value rather than its photographic qualities.

The Marrakech souk in a complicated maze of small streets in the old city, mostly decked. The hundreds or maybe thousands of small shops that form the souk are grouped by item category, this photo presents the "souk des babouches" or "souk Smata", babouches being the name of these leather slippers. Other famous areas include the carpet souk, the leather souk, the wool souk and many more. On some places you'll have the opportunity to see how they work, for example dyeing (the process of applying color to clothes) is very interesting there and will take you back some centuries.

While shopkeepers are very keen to invite visitors to their shops ("For the eye's pleasure..."), they do not like much tourists taking photos, which explains the hurry to get this capture. Also I heard Marrakech had a bad safety reputation some years ago, this is gone now as the morroccan gouvernment has carried out cleaning actions, the tourist police continues to closely monitor the souk and it's a perfectly safe place to visit.
Still it's not a good place to buy something, prices are high and bargaining is hard, if you have time better explore some less heavily visited cities, the stuff will be very similar, the starting prices less astronomical and the shopkeepers more open to negociations. It would be a miss however to overlook this side of a trip to Morocco, as you can find there superb products and bargaining or free talking around a cup of tea can be a very nice moment. Western notion of time does not apply to moroccan shops, be prepared to stay there for ages !

An extremely colorful shot with great repetitional elements in the composition. A very informative note, to accompany this image. I like the perspective & vanishing point with the man in the distance. Merci pour cette image tres bon!

Cher Jean-Yves,
Cette photographie a tout à fait sa place sur TE, car elle montre bien les particularités des souks du Moyen-Orient..
C'est vrai qu'il faut se montrer prudent à tous les niveaux et particulièrement pour prendre une photo (rarement appréciée).
De très belles couleurs dans ce marché se présentant une forme de dédale (il y a intérêt à semer des petits cailloux pour retrouver son chemin ;-)) -

merci pour cette photo. Tu encourages aussi ceux de nous qui veulent partager leurs emotions et souvenirs d'endroits et gens rencontres, tout en sachant que la qualite technique patit souvent a ces images.

C'est tout de meme amusant qu'il y ait des endroits ou on se precipite devant la camera et d'autres ou il faudrait presque la cacher...

good pic here, but I would have set it to f8 still to capture more details and use a stronger flash, but good details well kinda still

Bon jour Jean Yves, This is a very colourful & lively shot that takes me back to my visits to the souks of Sousse and Tunis in Tunesia. I like the strong graphic content thru repetitiveness of all those shoes. The depth is a bonus and the motion blur of the boy in the back gives it a sense of dynamism. Fine work, bravo!

A very great note Jean Yves, a colourful market picture, the depth is good, the cat on the for ground is very nice detail. The person on the market is little blur.

C'est toujours très difficle de prendre des photos de marché. Ici, bien que la qualité soit pas tout a fait au rendez vous, j'adore ce festival de couleurs ainsi que la composition de l'image. Le chat et le gamin ajoutent de la vie à ce lieu. Bien vu!

Une belle image avec beaucoup d'âme... C'est sûr que c'est agréable quand on peut avoir à la fois la technique et l'ambiance, mais à choisir entre les deux j'aime toujours mieux un cliché vivant à une image parfaite stérile. Ici, le flou ne me dérange pas trop; je dirais même que ça ajoute à l'atmosphère.

Composition très intéressante avec beaucoup d'éléments: le chat, les paniers, les souliers accrochés en avant plan, la ruelle en profondeur. Et pourtant, ça ne donne pas l'impression d'être surchargé. J'aime beaucoup!

Very mystic composition and vibrant colors, I like this photo a lot. Each subject has it right light and place- even the cat.

Belle photo qui rend parfaitement bien l'atmosphère confinée des Souks, même si étrangement il y est peu de monde (mais grâce à çà tu nous offres cette image). Avalanche de couleurs vives, très belle compo malgré le "hurry click".

J'aime bien cette photo, qui traduit bien l'ambiance du souk, malgré ses conditions de prise. Je regrette de ne pas en avoir pris moi même plus dans ces endroits vraiment fantastiques. Dommage que les photos ne rendent pas compte des bruits et des odeurs.
