Apocalyptic Meteora Photo

Photographer's Note

You really don't know what to admire first, in Meteora, in this trancendental place. The marvels of nature of the miracles of faith?

How can this geological "paradox", those supernatural sculptures that seem to come out of surrelistic painting, transmit so much harmony? How can a "flamboyant" landscape, evoke ecstatic silence? And what are the limits of human power? How could some skinny ascetics, climb up those vertical rocks and build the monasteries, those architectonic marvels?

Ακολουθεί το εισαγωγικό κείμενο μου, από ένα μεγάλο οδοιπορικό 36 σελίδων στα Μετέωρα, που θα δημοσιευθεί στο επόμενο τεύχος του περιοδικού "Explore Nature". Κυκλοφορεί τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή, ένθετο με την εφημερίδα "Εθνος":

"Τι να πρωτοθαυμάσεις σε αυτό το υπερβατικό τοπίο; Τα θεία ή τα ανθρώπινα; Τα θαύματα της φύσης ή τα θαύματα της πίστης; Αν πρέπει να περιγράψεις τα συναισθήματα σου με μία μόνο λέξη, ποιά να διαλέξεις; «Δέος», ίσως, αλλά ακόμα κι αυτή είναι πολύ «λίγη»!
Δέος, ναι! Αλλά και θαυμασμός, σάστισμα, μυστήριο, φόβος, μεγαλοπρέπεια, έκσταση, ευλάβεια, γαλήνη, πνευματική ανάταση, όλες αυτές οι λέξεις περιγράφουν κάποιες πτυχές των Μετεώρων, αυτού του τόπου που ανακηρύχθηκε «ιερός, αναλλοίωτος και απαράβατος» από την Πολιτεία, και Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς από την UNESCO. Όμως, η λέξη-«κλειδί» είναι άλλη: «Απορία», όχι μια, πολλές! Πως γίνεται αυτό το γεωλογικό παράδοξο, αυτά τα υπερφυσικά γλυπτά που μοιάζουν να ξεπετάχτηκαν από πίνακα σουρεαλιστή ζωγράφου, να εκπέμπουν τόση αρμονία; Πως γίνεται αυτό το «κραυγαλέο» τοπίο, να προκαλεί εκστατική σιωπή; Και πριν απ’ όλα, πως «γίνεται» ένα τέτοιο πέτρινο δάσος;
Οι θεωρίες, αρκετές. Άλλοι λένε πως εδώ ήταν κάποτε θάλασσα, και εκβολές ποταμού, του οποίου οι φερτές ύλες σχημάτισαν δελτοειδής κώνους, που αποκαλύφθηκαν όταν αποτραβήχθηκε η θάλασσα. Άλλοι λένε ότι ήταν λίμνη, που χύθηκε στο πέλαγος όταν «άνοιξε» η κοιλάδα των Τεμπών και από τον πυθμένα της ξεπήδησαν οι «πύργοι». Τίποτα δεν έχει αποδειχθεί, άλλωστε μικρή σημασία έχει! Αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι ότι ο «σκηνογράφος», έστησε το ιδανικό σκηνικό για να αναπτυχθεί αυτή η μοναδική «Μοναστική Λιθόπολις».

Ήδη από τον 10ο αιώνα, μεμονωμένοι ασκητές, αναχώρητες, αρνησίκοσμοι, ερημίτες και στυλίτες σκαρφάλωναν τα βράχια και έκαναν σπίτια τους τις σπηλιές («προσευχάδια»). Πώς παίρνεις την, ακατανόητη για πολλούς απόφαση, να «αρνηθείς» τον κόσμο τούτο, τον βέβαιο, τον χειροπιαστό, για μια αβέβαιη ανταμοιβή σε ένα «άλλο» κόσμο; Πως αφήνεις εκούσια πίσω «δικούς» και φίλους, χαρές και λύπες, πως απαρνιέσαι τα υλικά αγαθά, αδιαφορείς για το ποτάμι του χρόνου και επιχειρείς την ανάβαση προς τον ουρανό, εν ζωή ακόμα; Πως γίνεσαι ακάματος αθλητής στην πνευματική παλαίστρα της ακινησίας, τελειοθήρας ασκούμενος στην τέχνη της προσευχής, η οποία βασανιστικά αργά, περνώντας πλάι από τον εξαγνισμό της σάρκας και δίπλα από την μετάνοια, μετατρέπεται από «ικετευτική» σε «καθαρή», κατά την οποία κανείς δε ζητάει τίποτα, το μόνο ζητούμενο είναι η επικοινωνία με το Θεό;
Ακόμα και όσοι δεν κατανοούν όλα τα παραπάνω συγκινούνται από την προσπάθεια αυτών των ασκητών, που διευρύνουν τα όρια των ανθρώπινων δυνατοτήτων, και καταγάγουν νίκη λαμπρή απέναντι σε αυτό που στους πολλούς φαίνεται «αδύνατο». Όπως συγκινούνται, ίσως ακόμα περισσότερο, βλέποντας τα μεγαλοπρεπή μοναστήρια πού άρχισαν να «φυτρώνουν» τον 14ο αιώνα στην κορυφή απροσπέλαστων βράχων. Και απορούν: Που βρήκαν τη δύναμη αυτοί οι λιπόσαρκοι ερημίτες και ανέβηκαν σε αυτά τα άπαρτα κάστρα, ποιος έβαλε φτερά στα πόδια τους; Να αληθεύουν άραγε οι θρύλοι που τους θέλουν να δέθηκαν με σκοινιά στα πόδια αετών; Και πως μετέφεραν όλα αυτά τα υλικά εκεί ψηλά; Με μια καθημερινή αναμέτρηση με τον θάνατο, με δοκάρια σφηνωμένα σε τρύπες βράχων, πάνω στα οποία στήριζαν ξύλινες σκαλωσιές, και όταν έφταναν στην κορυφή έφτιαχναν πρωτόγονες ξύλινες ανεμόσκαλες, που τις έριχναν στον γκρεμό και τις ξαναμάζευαν τα βράδια για προφύλαξη από εισβολείς. Αργότερα έχτισαν πύργους, όπου τοποθέτησαν βριτζόνια (βαρούλκα) που τραβούσαν μέσα σε ένα δίχτυ αγαθά, αλλά και προσκυνητές λουσμένους σε κρύο ιδρώτα, μετά από ημίωρη περιδίνηση στο χάος. Σήμερα, με τα σκαλιά που λαξεύτηκαν στα βράχια τη δεκαετία του ’20, η πρόσβαση είναι σχετικά εύκολη, αλλά τότε; Για πόσους από τους μοναχούς, το άλμα προς τον ουρανό αποδείχθηκε «σάλτο μορτάλε»; Για τους μοναχούς, τέτοιες «απορίες» δεν υπήρξαν ποτέ. Απορία, μεταξύ άλλων, σημαίνει να μη βρίσκεις «πέρασμα», να μη βρίσκεις «δρόμο» σε κάποιο πρόβλημα. Για αυτούς ο δρόμος ήταν διάπλατα ανοιχτός, η πινακίδα έγραφε «πίστευε και μη ερεύνα!».

Επισκεφθείτε τα Μετέωρα σε κάποιο μεταίχμιο δύο εποχών, μεταξύ χειμώνα και άνοιξης ή φθινοπώρου και χειμώνα. Θα έχετε πολλές πιθανότητες να βιώσετε τη μοναδική εμπειρία των Μετεώρων χωρίς πολύ κόσμο, σε δύο διαφορετικές εποχές, τόσο άστατος είναι ο καιρός. Αν και η πραγματικά ταιριαστή εποχή, είναι μια που δεν αναγράφεται σε κανένα καλεντάρι, η «εποχή» της ομίχλης. Όταν κάνει την εμφάνιση της, το ούτως ή άλλως υπερβατικό τοπίο, γίνεται απόκοσμο και βαθιά μυστηριακό.
Μην αρκεστείτε στην επίσκεψη των 6 γνωστών μοναστηριών. Περπατήστε στα μονοπάτια που περνούν από μυστικές διόδους ανάμεσα στα βράχια, πατήστε τα παλιά καλντερίμια, με τις πέτρες που λείαναν τα σανδάλια των μοναχών πριν από αιώνες και γνωρίστε την άγνωστη πλευρά τους. Μάθετε τον κάθε βράχο με το όνομά του και ανακαλύψτε, κρυφά ασκηταριά, «φυλακές μοναχών» και ερειπωμένα μοναστήρια. Αν σας βαστάνε τα χέρια και τα πόδια σας, και κυρίως, αν το «λέει» η καρδιά σας, ακολουθήστε τους σύγχρονους αναρριχητές στις παράτολμες, αλλά ασφαλείς διαδρομές τους. Τις διαδρομές που, έμπλεοι λυρικού οίστρου, ονοματίζουν με ποιητικές εκφράσεις, όπως «Δρόμος του Νερού», «Ουράνια Σκάλα» και «Γραμμή της Πίπτουσας Σταγόνας». Δεν σας δελεάζουν;"

One word: FANTASTIC! But I'd like to add those too: magnificent, magical, wonderful, superb!
Sharpness is very adequate to the image, exposure is correct, colors are saturated and very very nice, the high pov is the best and the composition was very well elaborated, with truly effective results! Meteora is a unique place in this World of ours and you really knew how to captured it in such fabulous ways! That threatening-looking sky with the shapes of the clouds and its colors is a highlight in this already wonderful spot!

This is a very beautiful shot. Your composition is outstanding placing the buildings off center and framing the scene with the rock formations. The sky is amazing and you have captured it perfectly. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

This is simply amazing scenery! Very good moment's capture of the mad glow in the sky mix with this fine perspective view of the valley from high angle to show such a wonderful landscape view. I like your choice of POV in wide angle to show everything so well blended in mood, a little dark shade but yet still visible with detail of the sides of walls.

This is the second photo I've seen here today that looks like it was taken on a different planet! Is there some space shuttle I didn't hear about?

It's a stunning combination of the sky and the fantastic geology, plus the colorful buildings in the foreground that look like they grew out of the rocks. Nice!

this sky reminds me the first photo i uploaded on TE, also an apocalytic sunset
but i didn't have such a great foreground, meteora is enough that it even don't need the help of the sky to make a great photo
now, what's the secret of this photo
the contrast is fine for the sky, and fine for the land
everything is perfectly managed for the light,
that means in such a case, that you did a bracketing or something approaching the HDR technique, or...
whatever it is, that's a great job
the result is fantastic
just a minor detail, in my tastes i would have make the land area a little bit darker to suit to the mood of the sky

A marvellous shot that is well composed. This is truly a magnificent place. As you say it evokes awe and wonder. I presume you used a ND grad filter to get that sky or did you do some selective curves adjustment?
Either way it is a great shot.

Ambas cosas son admirables para mí, desde luego: la naturaleza misma y el empeño de los hombres de buscar lugares semejantes para la soledad y la oración. También la fotografía es asombrosa, el cielo saturado parece un mar de fuego en parte cubierto por cenizas, como si las brasas de una hoguera cubriesen la tierra. ¡Magnífica!

You have achieved the difficult - almost impossible - task of capturing an image of Meteora which is capable of standing out from the thousands of others. The glorious landscape is matched by the fiery sky and there is just enough light around for us to see the details of buildings, rocks and vegetation.

I came back just yesterday from a Easter trip to north Italy and I see you have posted a lot of excellent pictures.
Your words in the note define well this masterpiece: surrealistic, trascendental, marvel of nature... one does't know which one to prefer: the work of God or the work of man.

Εντυπωσιακός και "εξώκοσμος" ο ουρανός, κάνει το τοπίο να φαντάζει βαθιά μυστηριακό και απόκοσμα σαν την στιγμή της Αποκάλυψης.
Πού καλό επίσης το κείμενο που συνοδεύει την εξαιρετική φωτογραφία σου φίλε Ηρακλή, εξάπτει ακόμα περισσότερο την φαντασία και σε παροτρύνει για μια επίσκεψη.
