Photographer’s Note
"CAKE! everybody loves cake!", says Marjorie Dawes, the terrifying leader of weight loss support group Fatfighters in "Little Britain"*. but according to her unbeatable logic, "if you eat only half of it, it's only half the calories, so you can have twice as much".
about the photo: I found that the light in Chile is very capricious, dull and gray one moment, intense red the next, and the other way around. no way to predict, since the mountains that are everywhere can change the weather in seconds, and the light with it. that particular evening this beautiful strawberry coloured light lasted for all of 5 minutes, illuminating the Taapaca volcano towering over the town of Putre. the zig-zagging line on the right is a road over the mountains, I found it a nice accent.
---------------------
* some of the jokes in this BBC comedy show are witty and right to the point, some of the jokes I find vulgar. from the good ones my favourite is about Ray McCooney, an eccentric Scot who runs the Ye Olde Hotel in Scotland and tortures the guests of the restaurant with the riddles about the food the guests are enjoying. "I'm hard yet soft, I am coloured yet clear, I am fruity and sweet. I am jelly. what am I?", and after receiving a baffled answer "um... jelly?...", Ray suspiciously narrows the eyes and theatrically wispers "YE KNOW TOO MUCH!"

Kristine, this looks like a Mars scape as we would expect from the cinema. The color is warm to hot yet it is very very desolate in the overall feeling of the shot, and the lack of any kind of growth sort of keeps it from looking like dessert as I know it. Is that a path or a road winding its way up the mountain? I love the three diagonal band composition, great capture.

Hi kristine
You got amazing colours here. This is one place I have not been in my own country. Thanks for showing.

PS: there is a small spelling mistake in Tarapaca, or is really "Taapaca"?

Hi Kristine,
what a light, what a light, what a light! I also live the diagonals and the crisp sharpness of your shot. It does look a bit like a cake....possibly hard to chew though:). Love it.

Wonderful landscape, Kristine! Terrific reds and shadowplay in a picture that comes at you like a bulldozer. After seeing this I'd say you definitely ought to check out Mono Lake, California. You'll be surprised...
Have a great weekend! HUGS,

Absolutely gorgeous light and colours. Who could imagine such a barren landscape could make such fantastic images!? You certainly know when to be there at the right time. The strip of shadow serves to emphasise the vibrancy of the colours in the light. Excellent shot!

The level of detail in this picture is simply amazing. The sun really creates some great warm tones on the those rocks which in turn creates a nice contrast with the dark blue coolish sky. Those 3 layers of sky, area in the sun and area in the shade really create a good depth as well.

Hi Kristine, wonderful contrast of colors! Those reds stand out so beautifully against that deep blue. Also, like a lot the way you have compose the image creating layers with the colors of the subjects. Gorgeous image,

From Kristaps' big cooky and now your strawberry cake, we all going to get really fat or we have to hit the gym more often than sitting here writing critique :) I love it though, it's always fun to see the title of your shots. As good as the title, the image look delicious, perfectly golden brown with a touch of red from the strawberry flavor. Really wonderful clarity on the sandy mountain in the back and the more rocky in the front. I see all the texture and the layers of different shade is wonderful. Thanks Kristine.

Hello Kristine
Well this is a beauty, look at them warm colours achieved and the detail and sharpness is superb. As with Zmey's shot last week, I think big puffy clouds would have hindered this scene. A great play of light and shadow, and the hues are superb. Excellent work.

Hello Kristine! Strawberries are ways too long away to pick them from our fields but I also take the color that has indeed this sweet sensation when you eat this delicate sun warm something directly from the field. Your photo is a beauty, a true treasure, I love the long shadow, the little street going up and finally the mountain peaks with the late afternoon blue sky. What a great trip you take us along ... Happy weekend, Barbara.

Hello Kristine,
An impressive shot, and an informative note. The footpath on the right, making a sharp angle does add intrigue. I wonder what the composition of the soil is to create such a deep red, perhaps a great deal of iron oxide?
Warm regards,
Bulent

Bonjour Kristine,
Strawberry?
Yes, it is better for the cake, but I think rather about chestnut's cake covered by a carrots's cake with a saffron's mouses on the top. It would be necessary to try, maybe it would be nice!
The photo, in any case, is magnificent with this beautiful light and these three well delimited shots.
Have a nice WE, amicalement

Hi Kristine,
Very pretty composition, spectacular landscape.
I like the shade this time because it creates one more line which is parallel to other lines... I just like it.
I am just thinking now, recently I scanned a shot and the colors appeared a bit too reddish. I was not sure entirely if they are true or not but after a while I realized that something may be wrong indeed with the overall saturation because the sky was not quite blue but had a hint of red as well. So my question is -is this red color here not a litlle bit too saturated e.g. due to wrong white balance?
I would completely believe in these colors because sunset may really do that but the sky here is similar to sky in my shot...
In any case it is excellent work, and I am very jealous of that trip,
thanks for sharing,
M

Hi, Kristine -
Unbelievably clear and powerful colors. The photo conveys a great sense of the late afternoon strong and slanted sunlight. The road's a nice touch, too.

Kristine,
I didn't see all of these as you unveiled them - so to speak - but I delighted to dip back into your hot Chile archive. They're all so sharp and clear and colourful, like some huge format slide sitting on a lightbox - quite a treat really.
