Venice of the North Photo

Photographer’s Note

Stockholm is a city built by the water, so that it has been called the Venice of the North, and this picture shows this peculiarity. In the background you can see the unmistakable shape of the Town hall (Stadhuset) with its very high tower, one of the most famous landmark of the city, and, before that, the bridge of Vasabron which links the islet of Gamla Stan (at the left of the photo- not visible) with the quarter of Norrmalm.

Stoccolma è una città costruita sull’acqua, tanto da essere stata chiamata la Venezia del nord, e la foto mostra questa sua particolarità. Nello sfondo si può vedere la sagoma inconfondibile del municipio (Stadhuset) con la sua altissima torre, uno dei punti di riferimento più noti della città, e prima di questo il ponte Vasabron che unisce l’isolotto di Gamla Stan (alla sinistra, non visibile) col quartiere di Norrmalm.

Nice reflection of the building on the right, and good depth with the bridge and church in the background. But I have the feeling of a slight tilt to the right.

Buona immagine di viaggio, arricchita dai riflessi e dal tiepido sole nordico che illumina molto moderatamente la facciata. La leggera inclinazione della torre sulla sinistra è amplificata dal riflesso sull'acqua ma in tutta sincerità non mi sembra crei problemi. Il cielo si, è un po' rumoroso, credo in dipendenza da qualche tuo intervento pp che anche in altre foto ti ha dato questo effetto.

A very good picture ! of course , the composition is excellent . But the strong point , here , is the contrast between the lighted building in the fore ground , and the dark back ground .

Hello Donato.
As with many of your shots, there is a delightful capture of light in a shot which is a little under-exposed by conventional standards. But the result looks good. I would remove a little the distortion which makes the town hall tower look to be leaning left. The sky looks great!

Allora: premesso che la foto mi piace molto e mi lega a tanti bei ricordi estivi, devo però dirti che il cielo mi pare un pochino troppo "granuloso" e la composizione (personalmente, ma sono ignorante!) mi pare pendere un pò.
Giusto per trovare degli pseudo-difettucci!

bella foto, catturata (immagino) sfuttando un timido raggio di sole invernale di quelle parti, arricchita dalle sfumature del cielo e dai riflessi sull'acqua (difficili da immortalare con quella poca luce). Il fatto che sia un po cupa aiuta a contestualizzare il momento.

Ciao Donato,
l'edificio con quella composizione prospettica e con una illuminazione così dolce sono gli elementi di spicco di questo tuo lavoro. Le nuvole appena accennate e il moto dell'acqua contribuiscono a valorizzare l'equilibrio del pov.
PS: ma la macchina fotografica che avevi prima doveva essere davvero pessima se produceva un rumore così!

Ciao Donato. Foto divisa in due parti che si bilanciano ottimamante. Quella in luce con la bella prospettiva colorata riflessa sull'acqua che si allunga fino al ponte poi fino alla chiesa, entrambi in ombra e in silouette. Ottimo il cielo col solito rumore. Oggi però niente WS, sono troppo stanco.

bella immagine di questa città, considerata la Venezia del nord Europa anche se lo stile dei palazzi è ben diverso. Malgrado la scarsità di luce che avevi a disposizione sei riuscito a cogliere lo stupendo riflesso del palazzo. Non facile in quelle condizioni. Bravissimo!

A beautiful view from the Venice of North. You have caught the atmosphere of a winter day in Stockholm in a fine way. The low light illuminates the right hand building beautifully. The colours look fine and natural. Also the sky is gorgeous.A good composition. The tilting of the tower is a minor thing. Thanks for sharing!

non ti arrabbiare ma per essere perfetta dovevi eliminare da questa cartolina l'effetto grana-rumore del cielo molto evidente.
D'altronde vedendo i dati di esposizione non capisco come con solo 160 ISO sia venuta fuori questa grana.
L'unico motivo forse potrebbe essere che hai schiarito un originale molto oscuro (se vuoi, puoi rispondere a questo mio dubbio)
Per il resto un bellissimo POV.

Hi Donato,

A really fine picture of Stockholm taken in a very nice, but weak late autumn light. I love the clarity and colours. Your composition and your POV are excellent. A very minor thing is that personally I would perhaps have tried to take a few steps to the right to hide the building that is partly seen immediately to the left of the orange building to the right. TFS this beautiful Stockholm picture.

P.S. The orange building to the right is Rosenbad. It was designed by Ferdinand Boberg, an in Sweden well-known Art Nouveau architect. It is Government building and is housing the Swedish Prime Minister’s office. In the bottom floor towards the water there is a self service lunch restaurant for the staff of the Ministries in the vicinity. Originally, before the government moved in, there was classy restaurant here. My grandparents actually had their wedding dinner in this restaurant a long time ago. Most of the interior of the restaurant remains unchanged since those days.
