Photographer’s Note

quo vadis...

... or, "in the footsteps of bedouins" (literally). the photo was taken a year and a half ago in the dunes of merzouga, province of errachidia, morocco. the sun is to set down in a couple hours but it is already hanging very low above the surrounding dunes. however, we have stopped for the last rest before camping for night. the light is neither mid-day hard, nor the sun-setty orange one yet. the sky is calm with a slight hint of the rainstorm to come later that night. the sand is dry and responds to foot-steps with that characteristic sound we know from heated summer beaches.

oh, and to those who might ask: yes, the person in the photo is my muse avene, a fellow trekearther you know well here.

oh yes, i know this splendid dune with your muse to walking on the sand.Very nice the management of the colours and the light as the presence of the human being make the scene so interesting.The line of footsteps create an interesting marks on the sand.Informative your note too.

Wonderful capture! Shooting on the desert is in my wish list. I like the way the wind create those interesting sand shapes and lines. This capture shows exactly what I look for in a shot. The human inclusion was more than proper. Good lights and sharpness. Well done!

I like the sense of open space of this scene...which is always so refreshing when we live in concrete jungles. The composition with the woman off centre on the side of the large dune, works well, as it emphasises the openess of the desert on the right. Your clarity is excellent and colours very natural. Well done.

Hi, Kristaps. The footsteps are a good lead into the picture. You've put the person at a very interesting place in the picture. She gives the scale of the landscape. The dunes in the background have very nice shapes. I like how they go down from left to right, making a nice diagonal line.

Excellent composition with these dunes in colors almost reddish which gave a good contrast against sky a bit smoked. Impressive shot. Great sharpness because we can see clearly the traces on the sand. Good work. Regards, Consuelo

Hello Kristaps,
A great image taken from this exotic country. Many of the photos taken of these dunes are with strong sidelighting and are very successful, but your more muted rendition is just as beautiful. The soft lighting has a more feminine feeling to it and the woman walking on the sand accentuates this. The desert has many moods. The placement of the footprints are perfect and I knew even before I read your notes that these were Berber tents in the background. My mother went to Morocco about four years ago (in her late seventies...I told her that she was nuts to go here at her age) and she stayed in one of these tents. Beautiful!
