Photographer’s Note
This picture was taken from a boat on the Rhine, many years ago. I attended a study tour through Europe with my collegues from the University of Technology in Gothenburg. A much appreciated part of the tour was this boat trip between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, but all other parts were made by bus. We were visiting chemical companies around the continent.
I have search the web and come to the conclusion that this must be Burg Katz at St. Goarshausen. When I looked at this photo again after more than 40 years, I was quite surprised to see this paddlewheeler. I don´t remember it and had no idea these boats could be found here. I thought they were only on the Mississippi!

Hello Gunnar,
A fine black and white composition, which has a good balance to it. I like the juxtaposition of the boats and the positioning of the castle high above the town. Good digitisation with a fine range of tones and good sharpness. Interesting to see after all these years.

Hej Gunnar,
Again a nice photo from your old archives, and pretty well preserved and scanned too. Always nice to see this kind of old ships too. The town and the castle above it are a bonus. TFS.

Hello, Gunnar.
Another fine picture from your archives!
Very clear and sharp and detailed with excellent contrasts. You were clearly also a very accomplished photographer 44 years ago!
Actually, I think paddle-steamers were quite common in many places. There were several in Britain, and particularly in Scotland where the "Maid of the Loch" still sails up and down Loch Lomond. I seem to recall that the paddle-steamers which plied the Mississippi had one huge paddle at the stern rather than paddles on each side.
Anyway, a fine picture and an informative and interesting note to accompany it!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Gunnar,
thanks for sharing this historical shot. I am surprised by the high quality. Concerning the boat: Frank (Buin) has recently posted the steamer "Goethe" of 1913 at exactly the same place. Tfs!
Warm regards

Hi Gunnar,
At first I looked the "date taken" and say wow it was 1964... The old ship looks amazing, the town looks so lovely with the hill in BG...A superb composition with a perfect sharpness .
Congrats and have a nice Sunday,

Hallo Gunnar!
You are right concerning the castle ;-)
This one is a real treasure and the quality is amazing. For me its a sad fact that many of the here shown vineyards meanwhile weere given up because - unfortunately - winegrowing is much more profitable in flat regions - e.g. in France or Italy. Also in this aspect an interesting photo!
Greetings and have anice Sunday!

Hej Gunnar,
An interesting old photo. Funny how things can change in only 44 years. The Burg seems to be virtually growing straight out of the rock.

Hej Gunnar,
that's an excellent composition which is clearly seen at the very first glance (even though despite the very tight crop on the right)! The main balance is reached by the ship in the FG and the high hill in the FG. Very dynamic photo. Very good management of lighting and various tones. It's also very interesting to see such a boat... in Europe!
best wishes,
Elena

Gunnar,
This is a fine old shot! I believe this ship is still being used in this area. I remember seeing it last summer when we were cruising through this area, I believe it was called the Goethe.
Your composition is fine showing the boats from an angle that creates depth and direction. The castle and town in the background is nice. The shades and tones are nice here with the B&W format giving the photo a nostalgic look.
TFS,
Asa
