My first large post, fingers crossed I've got it right.
This is a not often photographed view of Sydney, no icons like the Harbour Bridge or the Opera House are visible from here. In the foreground is Darling harbour, once a working port but now a mecca for restaurants and bars. Darling Harbour is intended to be one of Sydney's "buzz" places, although some visitors find it lacking in character (and greenery). A former dockside area, the small harbour has been transformed into a major tourist site and leading convention and exhibition centre. A monorail service runs from the Central Business District to Darling Harbour and skirts the harbour, making stops at points around the harbour. Until now, Darling Harbour has been a place that has appealed more to little folk, due to the number of children's attractions, but the advent of the Cockle Wharf restaurant, bar and cafe complex has added a new dimension to Darling Harbour.
In the bottom left is the Sydney Maritime Museum and in the middle the large white building on the water is the Sydney Aquarium.
Running up from the bottom of frame is the Pyrmont bridge opened on 28 June 1902, a swing bridge, that would allow the wool ships to enter this small working space.
When I was a child (fifty something years ago) every Sunday my Dad would gather us up into the family car and off we’d go across this bridge to visit uncle Norman and aunty Thelma who lived in Glebe. What an outing that was, aunty Thelma always had the best sweeties. I can still taste them as if it was yesterday.
The sun had already set when this was shot, the glow from the Western sky was lighting the faces of the buildings and the blue night sky was closing in from the east.

You did it! So congratulations for your first large photo. And what a photo! Great lights, colors and beautiful city.
I like this high POV a lot.

A great view, you really caught the essence here to show the city in a very majestic way. Not the regular view with the Opera House but another interesting sight Sydney has to offer. Light in the exposure is great, high on detail, really good work...i like it.
grantlp (2113) 2008-08-09 3:25
This is an absolutely superb image of Darling harbour and the Sydney skyline, made even more impressive by the colours and lights you've captured during the "blue hour". Your camera settings are spot on, which has resulted in those exceptional colours within the city, and the clarity throughout is just perfect. The reflections of the lights in the waters of the harbour provide a good balance with those of the city, Very well done.

Gool shot and the large post is great. I've wanted to get a night shot of Sydney for ages, but never seem to get there when conditions are right. You've done a great job here. Composition and presentation is excellent, great light and details.

I'm a fan of nightshots and skylines, so the combination of the two, especially when executed so brilliantly like in this shot, just blows me away. The amazing amount of detail and colour in this nightshot is simply beautiful. Thanks also for a very detailed note!
Have a great weekend!
All the best,

First, I loved your nostalgic note about the family outings. I have many similar memories of life here in Melbourne.
Second, the shot is superb. A bit different from the usual Sydney scene, as you point out. The quality of the shot is amazing. Even more so in the large version of the WS. How did you do it? There's no information about exposure, tripod etc. I'm even wondering if this is a stitching job.
Anyway, remarkable shot. Congratulations.

Hi Peter, this is a spectacular pov from a high vantage point of Sidny at night.
Light well controled, very sharp and well composed.
You show us the nice skyline and reflections on the water.
That's true, I've never seen it from that pov.

Hi Peter, your finger crossing seems to have been successful! and what a great shot of Sydney. Exposure is perfect, showing plenty of detail in the lit buildings, reflection and a deep blue sky - and so sharp. Love to know where it was taken from (demonstrating my lack of knowledge of Sydney) and more information about how you took it. Great shot! Cheers, Steve

ktanska (27338) 2008-08-12 3:39
Magnificient city panorama. While there's no Opera House I think Sydney Tower is one of the major landmarks too. Smaller version looks a bit oversharp but large one looks just right. Good balance between sky and city lights. And those lights have lots of different tones with very few overexposed ones.
chirasak (2) 2008-08-12 4:47

Lovely night time capture of this famous harbor.
The golden lights reflecting in the calm green harbor are beautifully complimented by the deep blue night sky.
Love your warm memoir of Aunty Thelma and her sweets.

This is gorgeous! I like city shots, and the concentration of buildings in this area, with all of the dazzling lights, is mesmerizing. The blue of the sky is beautiful, and I like the way the bridge leads from the foreground to the city. I clicked on the large version and really enjoyed looking at all of the details.
Waylim (25502) 2008-11-06 18:41

macjake (67126) 2010-03-26 9:31
I saw this photo of yours posted on the TE home page a couple days ago!! I had to critique it.
It sure is a marvelous view point...i'd love to take shots from this same area.
There are 2 things that stand out for me from a constructive critique point of view...
First, the photo is tilting downwards to the left, and i find the saturation a little too much.
To clarify about the saturation, what i mean is that it still looks visually stunning and beautiful, just not realistic, thats all. I would have toned it down just a tad.
As for my last photo and the tilting tall buildings...(i've already explained it to Lisa)
I was fully aware of my buildings Tilting, and I was trying to correct it.
It was simply a case of my eyes being tired as i was working on it for so long. After a while your eyes kinda go funky on ya, and you can't see straight anymore !!! :)
thats what happened to me. I actually OVER CORRECTED it, making it tilt the other way! I'll learn from that, and next time i'll give my eyes a break, and go at it again later.
anyways...honestly Peter, this is a lovely photo. If i ever come to Australia, you me and Lisa should meet up and take shots from here
