Photographer’s Note
I spotted a pair of these daytime moths whilst walking on the moors near Haworth and I managed to get this picture after a number of unsuccessful attempts. There are different variations of Burnet moths in the UK, the five spot and the six spot being amongst the most common. This I think is quite a good example of a five spot feeding via its proboscis on the nectar of the thistle, the proboscis is like a drinking straw, and when not being used for feeding coils up in front of the insects head.
The bright colours of this insect make it very conspicuous, and the red warns predators to leave well alone as they are highly poisonous, with the body containing cyanide.
