Approaching Storm Photo

Photographer’s Note

It was a beautiful May 1st when I took this photo from the river Rhein ferry-crossing between Königswinter and Bad Godesberg - Mehlem looking down-stream.

In my WS, after the ship passed us, you can see a shot looking up-stream.

Just for the record, the sky really was this colour, I only slightly adjusted the contrast.
With this shot I was lucky...right place, right time.

Wunderbare Szene, sehr gut gesehen, gestaltet und aufgemmen. Gutes Blickwinkel und tolle Lichtkontrolle. Dunkle, stuermische (fast apokalyptische) Himmel bildet einen tollen Hintergrund fuer den weissen Boot sowie seine Spiegelungen im Wasser.

Hi Liliana,
The composition is nice but I would say that you pushed the contrasts a little bit to much. Your sky becomes extreme and you lose details on the boat. Anyway, it remains an excellent picture.

I agree that this is a decisive moment, the light is pure magic under those stormy skies, I like it a lot. the white ship works especially well to emphasise how bright the light is compared to the ink-blue clouds, and you have managed exposure superbly - the white is blinding white, while still with enough details. excellent work, my compliments.

Good capture of this pov showing cruise liner boat even though it may be too strong contrast due to pp work, making the sky really dark. The boat details seem a bit of OE especially at the upper deck.

I like WS version of tone. Good post.

Il y a un très fort contraste en le blanc et le noir ! L'image semble un peu irréelle mais le tout rend très bien avec ce contraste. Peut-être que le bateau et les maison sont un peu surexposés mais c'est l'effet que tu as voulu !

Hello Lili, I always like this kind of image or is profiled water level and one (explosion in this case Ci) cloudy behind plane, a good alternation of shade and light also on the reflections of the boat, your photograph luminous and is very coloured, in the WS the photograph upstream also very is successful and there the sky is not yet with the storm, sincerely......................Bonjour Lili, j’aime toujours ce genre d’image ou se profile plan d’eau et une (explosion dans ce cas ci) nuageuse en arrière plan, une bonne alternance d'ombre et de lumière aussi sur les reflets du bateau, ta photo est lumineuse et très colorée, dans le WS la photo en amont est aussi très réussie et là le ciel n’est pas encore à la tempête, bien amicalement

Strange, almost eerie (surreal?) light and contrast that makes the long cruiser and the dramatic sky stand out much. I guess that the WS looks more natural, but although it is also a very good photo, it is much less powerful than this one.

Hello Liliana.
That is a very long and impressive looking cruise boat. It stands out remarkably against the dark landscape, water and sky behind it. Perhaps the contrast is a little strong, but the effect is powerful. The clouds look magnificent and very threatening. The angle of view makes for a strong composition.

Photographic moments like this are ALWAYS a real gem. I love these rare glimpses where the sky has this dark and dramatic view and at the same time the foreground element is bathed by sun light. Really, very good moment to have the camera with you!

Hello Lili, I wonder how you make this shots sometimes. The color of the clouds is so well balanced that it is almost like a painting. The gap between your highlights and your shadows is big, but somehow it doesn't bother.

Wonderful, how naively carelessly the ship looks in its almost glamour whiteness while skies are turning into monsters.

A difficult shot, no doubt about this. The B-W gap is big and I feel a small amount of HDR was needed to preserve the white details. It does not bother me, but I think it would be better somehow. The contrasting clouds is your strong background here.

Lucky you to be there at the right time. I don't really like the shaprness you applied -- the image would look more natural with softy edges.. well, all of us uses PS.. good luck ;)

Hi Liliana,

It's an impressive shot meanwhile I find the result more like a paint than a picture: the sky is for me a bit too textured and the contrast is very strong.
