Photographer’s Note
This week, I have decided to take up a challenge.
I don't really like the city of Coventry but I'm going to try to show you interesting and maybe nice things, so that you almost feel like visiting it.
Coventry is the ninth largest city in England with over 300 000 inhabitants, situated in the West Midlands, 150km north west of London and only 30km east of the second English city called Birmingham.
Coventry is known for several matters, one of them being the furthest city from the coast in Britain.
About 80% of Coventry population is white but this number hides another reality. For example, there are so many polish people that the radio BBC Coventry & Warwikshire is broadcasted in polish on sunday evenings. 1 in 7 people in Coventry is of ethnic minorities, 12% of Coventry population is from Asia and 80 languages are spoken in this multi-ethnic city with new settlers like Somalian, Kurdish, Afghanistani and Bosnian groups.
Coventry is also known for its high number of factories in the automotive sector; Jaguar and Peugeot having closed quite recently and creating a high unemployment rate.
Those factories were turned into factories producing arms and weapons during WW2. That is why the Germans decided to bombard the entire city with the famous Blitz on November 14, 1940. They destroyed the entire city, including the Cathedral. The city was constructed again just after the war in a hurry to lodge the population again and they didn’t pay any special attention to the design, that’s what I don’t like in Coventry. But if you look hard, there are a few nice buildings left.
The city has decided to leave the Cathedral in ruins in order to remember about the war and it has become a symbol for peace and reconciliation.
A new cathedral was built just next to it. On this picture, you can only see the ruins of the old one and the massive entrance of the very modern new cathedral on the right side with the big cross.

Hi Estelle,
it is a dramatic photo with a deep blue sky that matches with the brown old buildings. it gives a good contrast. the positioning of the water spurts are well plsaced and given a good thought before shooting. the movement gives life to the photo and allow the viewers to explore your photo.

Bonjour Estelle,

hi Estelle
I like the deep contrast here with nice fountains and blue sky, showing the brightly lit architecture front of the buildings.
Good work.

Bonjour Estelle

Yves.

A brilliant shot! I visited Coventry some years ago and didn't like the city that much. But this is a beautiful shot of "rebuilding Coventry", which is a well-known phenomenon in the city. Well done!
