Photographer’s Note

Text from www.panoramas.lt, www.exploringcity.com
Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (XV – XVIII cent.) was the first parish church in Lithuania, built in 1409 by Grand Duke Vytautas’ efforts.
The Gothic basilica-like towerless church with its step façade was built with an apse at the east end and adapted to defend the town.

The church was burnt, built and rebuilt a lot of times, finally restored in 1840 - 1858, in 1894 the side altar was renovated.

On the main altar hangs a painting of the Virgin Mary with infant, painted in 1123 Turkey, Constantinople and given as a gift to Duke Vytautas by the emperor Emmanuel II. The painting is believed to be making miracles, removing misfortune.
(You can see it here.)

I wonder what reasons made the emperor send the painting so far. Maybe all the christian kings were greeting a newly baptised land this way. Would be interesting to see the whole gift list then.
