Photographer’s Note

The Monastery of Panagia Chryssopodaritissa was built in 12th century on a cave in Peiros river's valley. Its name (in Greek means: Mother of God with golden leg), according to a legend, was given when a man with a sick leg was healed by Mother of God, the protectress of this Monastery, and offered a golden cover to its icon's leg. During the Greek revolution in 1820s, Germanos, metropolitan of Patra, a rebels' leader, lived there for some time. It was destroyed in 1826 by the Aegyptians who helped Turks to subdue the rebels. The Monastery was restored in 90s by a new monastic brotherhood living in it.
