To the Women Working in Markets (x 6) Photo

Photographer’s Note

With a small wink to charming and ;-))smoking (?) Polonaise who had announced this day well in advance, this series of photos is my little contribution to the International Women's Day [March 8, 2008] : a tribute to all the courageous and so hard-working women in India, - this one dedicated to the women who work physically in the cities, - (after a much earlier post, "Hommage To The Indian Village Women").

... Women are rarely seen smoking in public in India, let alone small cigars ! (these are not "bidies") : another sign of their strength and defiance...

A great encounter in a fascinating old fruits and vegetable market in Visakhapatnam, where I was so interested by all a group of those strong and courageous and colourful ladies that I spent an hour in their company, observing their sometimes hotly debated arguments, other times when they were joking together or with me (although none of them could speak a word of English, of course).

Hi dear Cath ! My neighbour today !
Sometimes it's quite easy to make some foresights. This was exactly what I had expected today from you.
Amazing pov ! Very nice composed, great warm colors and an impression which is not easy to describe. For shure they are no wealthy but looking at their faces, quite happy.
Also my best wishes to you for this very very special day. But you know my country very well; nothing is as good as male part of the population proclaims in regard to the turkish women !

Encore une fois, regarder ta photo est une expédition complète, une histoire en plusieurs épisodes. Il n'y a que toi pour faire ça! Je suis admirative, puisque pour ma part, ça me prend parfois plus d'un mois pour publier... une seule photo! :))
Couleurs splendides de l'Inde. Et le sourire si merveilleux de ces femmes extraordinairement belles et plein de fierté! J'aime ces bras entremêlés et ces cigares suspendus à leurs lèvres! :)
Ton approche des gens est remarquable et riche. Merci!

Tes dames sont de bon humeur, chere Catherine. Elles s'amusent, comme si elles etaient consciente que fumer ca ne rapporte pas mais que "il faut prendre tout ce que la vie offre". Ce moment de distraction doit etre entre deux seance de travail dur. Ca, on se rappelle le 8. mars. Ton hommage exprime par ta note est tendre et signifiant. Merci de la part d'un homme feministe.

The move from ususal tourist eye for the trditional, conservative Indian woman.
Yes we Indians know such ones exist, but never before in such stark frame, right in front of our eye.

Olá Cath, a very enjoyable double portrait, showing how colorful India is. Good low POV giving them some power as if they were in a throne. The best of all are their funny expressions while smoking. I like to see arms everywhere making me think in a first glance that there is more than 2 women in there...Good one to hommage women in this day.

Tu m'as souvent dit "Vive les Random" je suis bien ok avec toi.Je passe hélas assez souvent à côté de belles photos par manque de temps. Celle ci est superbe. à tout point de vue.
Mais alors leur expression est géniale - Bravo Catherine.
As tu l'intention d'aller au meeting TE de Lille ? ça serait un plaisir de te rencontrer.
