Photographer’s Note

(Bonagiri village)
This is the only photo that I could take in the village, outside the school where we spent the whole day - there was a reason for that : the person accompanying me was fearing the grievances of the villagers (they might think that he was an official representing the government), - he had had probably bad experiences before, - but at that moment, I could not understand why the village was off limits for us and this possible explanation was only given to me much later, back in Hyderabad.

Instead, my guide told me that no, there were no communist militants active in the zone, so this was not the danger, but some of the people of this ethnic minority could be drunk and it would have been inappropriate for me to encounter such person. I was feeling very frustrated, insisted that I could not be intimidated by a drunkard, that I had been in the ex-USSR where there is much more alcoholism than in India and that I had been also in far more dangerous places to visit schools (in Haiti, for instance), but my guide was adamant, he did not want any contact with the villagers...

I escaped for a few instants : without any translator, the adults were not smiling much in the beginning but with the children, they started laughing too ; this is the only photo that I could take... I like the expressions on those friendly faces, aren't they beautiful ? ... I have been working on the photos of the children from that school, -*not so good due to poor light inside the class*, still will send the prints later on, you'll see the various classes (in only one classroom) here : Next photo : the classroom (please, read the description too , if time !) =>
