Maduros da Pesca (Fishing aficionados)

Recreational fishing is a very popular activity for many Portuguese men, in particular amongst the elderly population. To be quite honest, I have never seen any fish being caught at the so called good fishing grounds along the great “Avenida Marginal” from Lisbon to Cascais. There are always many fishermen throwing the line but the wishful thinking is certainly stronger than any fish caught.

Today’s posting is a picture of a group of those “line throwers”, which I found during a sunny day drive from Sintra to Ericeira. The belvedere shown is just before the picturesque village of Azenhas do Mar seen here, thanks to Aires Santos. It is located on top of a rocky cliff, some 30 to 35 meters above sea level. To get to the “good” fishing spot, they need quite long and strong fishing rods, as you can see.

I stopped there for a while and after 5 minutes I realized that all the fuss is more about a good spot for a chat about football, followed by a light picnic lunch with some Portuguese ham, cheese, salami, good local bread and, of course, a bottle or two of also local wine!!! Fishing really comes second and is only an excuse to leave the house for a couple of hours!!! You can perceive it from the picture.

Hi Antonio,

beautiful colors in this photo, together with a great composition. The curves of the slope, where the fishermans are stending, gives really an added dimension to the photo.

Mas eles escolheram um local belíssimo, para passar esse bom par de horas .Bom gosto eles têm de sobra, não é? A foto é perfeita com esse azul intenso do céu e as ondas bem branquinhas.

There's a bright airiness to this shot that I find appealing, and your composition works well too, with the wall winding it's way in from the corner.
You've pushed the saturation too far though, in my opinion, especially the blues which have taken on a psychedelic quality that looks rather unnatural.
It's a good shot Antonio - you just need to tone down those colours!

Olá Sr Antonio, your beautiful photo explains everything. As you have rightfully mentioned in your note, fishing is just an excuse for coming together and talking about the daily life. Hello Antonio,

The weather here proves to be far more appealing than that currently in our shared local area. It is a shame that the Queen Victoria had to visit on such a dismal day. I like the bold use of colour here - the blue is accurately complimented by the yellow, earthy tones of the rock wall. You note really helps to set the scene well; it is a good way to get out of the house for these men in their twilight years. The sharpness of the foaming sea is wonderful. There is a beautiful relaxed felling here, it is a great depiction of a favourite past time of many. Well done, enjoy your week Antonio. Regards from UQ,

They don't seem to catch a lot of fish but I bet they have a good time chatting and enjoying the sea breeze. The brightly saturated colours look very nice and the composition is excellent. The people give life and dimension to the image while at the same time you show us a little bit of the lifestyle of this place. Well done Antonio.

Captaste muito bem o ambiente desses sítios de pescadores, ou piscaretas, como alguns gostam de lhes chamar, pelo que percebo para distinguir a pesca como desculpa para o convívio para a pesca "mais à séria". A compo é agradável, com a falésia murada "em bico", a espuma da rebentação e o céu bem azul. Só é pena que haja algum ruído no céu, mas é provável que na maior parte dos monitores nem se note, este com que estou agora é que é muito esquisito com os céus.

esse é um esporte que não gosto, e nem sei se pode ser chamado de esporte também, poréma foto ficou ótima, com cores bem saturadas, reparei um pouco de granulação no céu, mas nada que incomode, a compactação do JPG costuma causar isso.

Os entusiastas da pesca estão por todo o lado. Ao contrário por mim os peixes podem ficar tranquilos. São seres com direito à vida. Por vezes quem pesca é só pelo prazer do desporto. Apesar de tudo o tempo me ensinou a ser protector dos seres mais frágeis. Também já fiz pesca de várias formas e em Lagos podia ter tido problemas com um polvo de tamanho considerável. Hi Antonio, it could be they don't really want to catch a fish. The fishing is just an excuse to get out of the house and meet with their mates. The colour and detail in this shot of yours is excellent, sharp without being over sharp. I really like the texture you've pulled out in that surf. Very nicely done.

Pelos vistos tiveste por ca no inicio do ano.

A Praia Grande, Prais da Maças, Azenhas do Mar e Praia da Aguda fazem uma das zonas mais bonitas do nosso país.

As Azenhas em particular um dos meu locais favoritos. Aqui ainda se respira tranquilidade e boa disposição que tu capturas-te bem na tua foto.

O nosso ceu azul, que so vi (para alem daqui) na Australia está bem retratado na tua foto.

Enfim mais uma muito boa

Olá António, as cores e luminosidade desta estão fantásticas e gosto bastante da composição com este muro aos 'sss' a orientar a cena. O sítio é lindíssimo (confesso que também tenho muitas fotos daqui...) e dá para sentir o ambiente de convívio que descreves na nota. Excelente 'daily life'.

Excellent POV for this shot with a nice and relaxed atmosphere.I like how they talk more to each other than concentrate on fishing(I hope my english is correct)But where are their women,waiting in the kitchen for a good harvest?
Good composition with this triangle of balustrade and wonderful bright colors.

First of all these saturated colors are very eyecatchers, and I liek a lot.

O ponto de tomada e o enquadramento estão muito bons. O azul ao fundo está um pouco desbotado mas não chega a estragar a qualidade da foto que vem acompanhada de boa nota.

Hi Antonio. Good composition, added to with the fun notes about how fishing may be an escape as much as it is to catch fish, i think this may not be the only instance. Good colours and well cropped. The tall ertical rod adds to the dynamics. TFS. Murray.

uma linda vista! Gostei da saturação utilizada, o que fez por realçar o azul do bonito céu e as cores das roupas dos pescadores. O ponto de tomada também está atraente. Na verdade dá a realmente impressão de que esses senhores estão mais a conversar do que a própria a pescar. Um ponto de reunião de amigos, eu diria. Ótimo trabalho!

Nice view of this socializing event, where fishing as you mention in your note seems to be more a pretext than a real target. Excellent match of the blue sky with the white waves.
