9 temple photos : a small reportage Photo

Photographer’s Note

This story has 9 photos in all (most of them just FYI, For Your Information) and is about the brisk business that a team of professional photographers was doing in the pilgrim town of Bhadrachalam, the 2nd pilgrim place in importance in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Many of those pilgrims offer their hair to the temple and some of the ladies have put yellow turmeric paste on their face (seen on other photos), supposed to be good for the skin and considered beautiful ; this group was coming from a village near Warangal, about 3 hours by train and some time by bus as well. They were very happy to pose for me and I could take a series of such groups of people, all very interested to see their face on the LCD screen...

Just behind this group is a small "lab" where photos are printed instantly with modern machines. The price of those photos is not excessive, but still not affordable for the very poors : 35 Indian Rupees = 0,87 US$ or 0,59€... One of the photographers took my photo (before I had the occasion to give my agreement, but then I took the photo of both photographers too !), then told me that I could have a look at their "studio" ; he refused any payment for the print (a funny photo, the last of the series).

8 - my portrait with one of the photographers : : a not very good Canon shot of a Nikon printed photo, with some considerations about travelling in India as a lone woman.

Bonjour Catherine,
C'est toujours une expédition et une découverte que de regarder une de tes photos. Je ne suis pas souvent sur TE, mais quand je regarde une photo, je prends mon temps. Parfois, je lis les notes. Les tiennes, je les lis du début à la fin. Et ici, je dois dire : "Quelle fin!" :) J'y reviendrai. Enfin, tout ça pour te dire que j'apprécie beaucoup tes photos et tes notes.
Je ne pense pas que cette photo en particulier soit ta meilleure. Elle est un peu trop statique à mon goût. Mais être là-bas, je n'aurais sans doute pas fait mieux. Tu as une sympathie communicative pour les gens qui se ressent dans chacune de tes photos, et ça, peu de gens y parviennent. Et ça, je peux te dire que je l'admire. J'ai adoré ta note dans la 8e photo. :)) Oui, je crois que c'est l'un des avantages de vieillir quand, évidemment, notre intérêt n'est pas dans notre appréciation "physique" par les autres. Mais, encore faut-il avoir d'abord de l'intérêt pour les autres personnes, et ça, tu l'as, à n'en pas douter.

really a nice reportage shot as the others of your mini reportage.These people are unfamiliar with photos so they take abnormal poses,but at the same time very interesting ones.Excellent the light and the colours of the captures.Informative your note too.

Bonjour chere Catherine,
a votre nouveau sourire dans l'Intro, je rajoutte encore deux officiels pour cette belle photo que je groupe dans "Maternite", une collection que j'aime bien. Maman sur votre photo est sans cheveux et c'est une originalite que j'apprecie beaucoup. Les couleurs de Kodak jaune - rouge est ma combinaison preferee - il n'y a pas une plus chaude. Eh bien ! un grand merci pour ce reportage parfaitement réalisé et très intéressant quant aux us et coutumes des habitants.
Cela a dû demander un travail certain pour mettre tout en place (liens, etc.).
Réalisation de qualité qui mérite d'être soulignée et encouragée.
Addenda : Vous avez raison quant au Mausolée, des renseignements plus précis sont donnés dans la note d'accompagnement en français.

Belle photo de ces gens croyants que vous avez pris, belle série sur ce magnifique voyage que vous avez ou que vous faite,jolies couleurs de ces vètements, bonne netteté de ce groupe d' enfant avec cette dame.
Le flou légé du groupe arrière montre bien le légé mouvement de ces gens.

Nice shot of the family with shaven heads., You know its age old tradition in India and many people find it really funny and strange. I loved the bright colors and the story.

Dear Catherine,
I love all this series of photos especially the last one! I laughed at your ability to laugh at yourself. Yes, (alte) middle age does have its advantages. I'm the same age so my smile at your note was one of recognition. After reaching a certain age you really can get away with things that you may not have before, even if only because you are not noticed so much. I like the idea of your little IXUS for the same reason.
