Arcos de Valdevez

There is not much to say about this town, other than the views along the river Vez are spectacular, particularly at sunset.

Arcos de Valdevez is a municipality in the North of Portugal located in between the rivers Minho and Lima. Its population is around 2,200 inhabitants.

According to the local tradition was in Arcos de Valdevez that Alfonso VII of León and Castille and D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, met in 1140, three years before Portugal was recognized as de jure independent from Castille. The interesting about this meeting is nobody knows for sure if it was a simple gentlemen tournament or a big battle.

Going through the old town we can see the Main Church (XVII Century), the “Casa da Andorinha (XVII century) with its tower and balcony with jonick columns, the “Casa da Ponte (XVIII century), the Cruzeiro do Senhor dos Milagres (XIX century) in neo-classic style and the Bridge, which in 1876 replaced the old medieval bridge.

The last three monuments of the list above can be seen in this post card from Portugal.
