Photographer’s Note
The twisting narrows and colorful rock formations are a fascinating showcase of the effects of water in an arid land. Violent downpours cause a surge of water, mud, and rock to flow through these narrows cutting away and undermining the rocky canyon walls. As you walk up Golden Canyon, you travel through an ancient, changing landscape. The colorful canyon walls contain conglomerate layers of light-colored deposits of silt and clay. This is a great hike through the badlands of Desert Valley. You can hike up to Zabriskie Point or loop around through Gower Gulch back to the Golden Canyon trailhead. Either way, there are unlimited photo possibilities. It seams there is an image waiting to be captured around every bend.
