Photographer's Note
The hunters stab the whale as comes close to their boat, off the coast of Lamalera, Indonesia. Inhabitants of the tiny village of Lamalera in Indonesia still hunt sperm whales using traditional methods. They have no motorboats, harpoons or ropes but still manage to bring home a 23m whale which provides food and materials for the whole village.

Whatever your feelings on whale hunting, you have to give it to these guys for sheer courage. That's a whole world of effort and danger to go through to collect some food and materials for the village.
The strength of this image is in its' subject matter. The men look almost frenzied in the way they are attacking the whale - was it still alive at this stage? That must have been some experience for you to witness this hunt.

Even more impressive than last one I saw, a close up and a follow up. Excellent, worthy of a natural history prize.
