Photographer's Note
MORNING HAS BROKEN
The title for this photograph is borrowed from a song made famous by Cat Stevens. According to Cath Featherstone (feather), the lyrics come from a hymn by Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965) and are found in the Anglican Hymnal. I personally prefer viewing the scene with an accompaniment of the the slow movement of one of Beethovens immortal symphonies (the Sixth).
The scene is a sunrise over the Civil War Battlefield in Fredericksburg, Virginia, close to the site from where I had produced another image Light Through the Trees, this past September. A few weeks ago, an exceptionally talented photographer and TE-loyalist, Hakan Delic, visited me. It was a rather bleak day, but we did manage to get off a few shots together at the battlefield. You can see Hakan plying his craft, by clicking on the ws.
The State of Virginia saw the first English settlers in America in mid-May 1607, and during the past year it celebrated its 400th Anniversary. It is the oldest of the 50 states comprising the United States, but it is a child compared to most European nations, and an infant compared with the Middle Eastern nations.
One hundred and sixty km (100 miles) north of Jamestown, where the British first landed, is the historic city of Fredericksburg, which assumed historical prominence in two different epochs. It was the childhood home of George Washington, the first President of the United States and hosted many of the other Forefathers of the Nation, including Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and John Paul Jones. Four score and seven years, later, historical prominence revisited the area. Located at the border of the Northern (Union States) and Southern (Confederate) States, it changed hands a total of seven times during battles of the Civil War (1861-65). On a bone-chilling week in December 1862, the Battle of Fredericksburg was fought, pitting over 85,000 Union and Confederate against each other.
My daily drive to work to teach my classes takes me through a 7-km stretch of the Fredericksburg Battlefield, with the trenches used by the Confederate troops running alongside the narrow meandering roadway. In the early morning it is the rising sun that strikes the trenches at a grazing angle that makes deep trenches of them, and in the late afternoons it is the setting sun in the west that recreates the effect. The hauntingly beautiful battlefield presents a poignant vision of an area where thousands of young soldiers died. The Confederate States were fighting to break off, to secede, from the Union, and the Union Troops were fighting to stop their secession. Most people who think about the event now laymen and scholars alike regard it as a national tragedy in which families were divided, brothers fighting against brothers. Abraham Lincoln, who hailed from the midwestern State of Illinois, was the President of the United States during those war years, and is now recognized as one of the greatest of all Presidents precisely because the North prevailed in the war, and the union was preserved.
The view in the photograph is a sunrise, with sunlight creating a glow in the horizon. Just a little later it will light up the trenches. The time for this photo was 7:50 am and I was rushing to make an 8:00 am class.
I shot the image with a Nikon D-70, 18-70-mm lens, uv-filter, tripod. A small bit of post-processing specifically in warming the high tones, according to the model provided by Didi Massoud (Didi) in a ws. Finally, in response to Jean Yves (pixelterror), I just posted "a killer" to ws.

I like this even better than the earlier 9-12 photo which had more intense beams. The lower view and more balanced composition makes it stand out. Nice suprise in the WS. The evening did not present much in the way of photography but the company was exceptional. I will send you some photos soon. Best wishes,

Hola Bulent.
I don't think that having an extra hour to get to your class you would get a better shot than this one, this is a superb photo and you were very lucky to find a place like this in a specific time of the morning. The sunrays coming through the trees in a misty morning is magnificent. Very well captured from a good POV. Great colors and long shadows. Well done.
Best regards.

Hallo my friend
I went into your site to see all the pictures that I did not see while sick, and as always become conscious of how wonderful it is to feel alive and having people around you that care. Every picture of you and all my other TE friends that I looked at this evening bestow a different feeling of life and living. Is a camera not the most fantastic piece of equipment? I would like to say something about every picture; instead, I will use this time to invite you for a visit with my family and me whenever you are in South Africa. In Peace www.servas.org

I like these kinds of shots, where you can see light rays as the sun comes through the trees. It makes this seem almost unreal and definitely beautiful. When I realize that this is a famous battlefield from the Civil War it makes the photo even more enchanting. Well done!

I remember very well your first post from here and I think you have done even better this time. The sunbeams through the trees are definitely the icing on the cake. I also like the way the low-lying sun is highlighting parts of the scene. Beautiful!
Morning has Broken is also a hymn in the Anglican hymnbook. Words are by Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965). It is often sung in schools in the UK.

Hello Bülent,
It's not the first time I envy you for enjoying such a scenic way to work. It beautiful!
It's funny that I was never a great fan of Cat Stevens (not that I dislike him, well at contrary, I simply never paid attention to his work), but the fact is that some of his songs keep 'hanging on my head', sometimes for years. It is happening to me since I saw this post yesterday and it happens since 13 years sometimes when I saw photos of Kathmandu, just because I heard it once or twice when I were there.
I can't remember the 6th of Beethoven... I'll try to remember hearing it at home. :-)
Warm regards, José.

Hello, Bulent -
This is a moving image, not so much for what it is as for what it shows - the battle of Fredricksburg. And the sun streamers and the light on the trees are beautifully captured.
However, if you go around hacking the feet off photographers (frozen or not), there won't be many left!
Best,

Hello Professor "A"
A nice picture of the sunlight filtering through the trees, about to reach the road, where you've presented us with a couple of excellent photographs. Like the streaks of sunbeams here. I understand from your note that you were in a real hurry, otherwise, a passing person or bicycle etc. would have created more impact IMHO. A beautiful shot nonetheless.

Hi Bulent,
It's a shame we cannot listen to music while we see these images. Some days ago I was thinking that perhaps a soundtrack chose by the owner of the image would be a great addition. I know this sounds weird...well, let's talk about your composition which brings a great atmosphere with those greens and specially the light rays. It's indeed a lot pleasant image and it makes me relax a bit in this rainy wednesday. Love it!

what a beautiful scene. The sun light is magically brought into the dense trees. The color of the trees changes with the amount of the sunlight brought in. Hi Bulent,
Another fine addition to your impressive gallery! This one is much like 'light through the trees' but I seem to like this one even more. The workshop link is an excellent example of to power of Photoshop and a talented artist! I have always thought of Virginia as being a more forested and leafy US state, this sort of shot confirms my ideas. The subtle shafts of light filtering into the roadside glen are very soothing to witness. The dappled light in the FG is a beautiful inclusion also. An impressive scene!

Well you actually took time out to superimpose the deer,i was actually wondering if you were serious reading a few comments....that's so thougtful and creative. The deer is a 'real killer' ;)?
The sunburst provide the strong diagonals that make the composition so strong which otherwise could have looked flat.
The leaves on tree in the FG could have been sharper..seems to have a lack of definition..just a thought..but light condition change so subtlely..guess its diff to manage..have seen a similar shot..yours is an eyecatcher nevertheless..
Overall i liked it Professor.

Yes, Cat Stevens used to write some nice songs before he became a hardened radical. But I think you're right, a little Beethoven, or Vivaldi Four Seasons, would be the music for this scene. (Maybe for the Pastorale it should be spring, though, and there should be an approaching storm.) This has a great late-summer feel, with the leaves just starting to dry out and fall, but with the sun still warm and pleasant. Happy Holidays, Bulent!

İnanılmaz güzel ışık huzmesinin süslediği,son derece romantik, nefis bir tablo bu.İçinde, dantel şemsiyeli şapkalı,uzun elbiseli lady leri taşıyan 1700 lerdeki atlı arabalardan biri köşeden çıkıverecek gibi geldi.Elinize gözünüze sağlık.Tebrikler, selamlar

Hi Bulent,
One of my mother's favorite songs .. beautiful image .. I love the rays of light. I love the tone of the trees .. the evocative empty road ... for some reason for me autumn goes with guitar .. Fernando Sor .. hmm
Merry Christmas.

Great nature shot with outstanding lighting! You managed to capture the moment beautifully here with the early morning mist and the suns rays streaking through the tress. I also like the WS with the deer in this scene.

Dear Bulent,
This is a perfect beauty, with an amazing managment of light. There is a contrast between the geometry of the shadows and the sweetness of brown leaves. Well, well done.
I wish you and your family a happy New Year,

Hello Bulent,
The light in the image is magical. The sunlight filtering through the branches create this spiritual and inspirational mood. Excellent compo with very good details and colours. The solitude of the place give us a sense of peace. Beautiful work. I wish you the best in the New Year and lots of joy :-)

Hi Bulent,
The beautiful dark green colours remind me to the paintings of Jacob van Ruisdael. Of course the asphalt road is an ugly anachronism so I did remove it in the workshop. I thought a horse more appropriate then a pair of deer, so I hope you dont mind I swapped them.
Although you didnt mention van Ruisdael I have to complement you with your excellent info with this lovely picture.

I was first allured by the title, since I know the song, but I like the rays of sun filtering though the trees. Your note is interesting, since I know the Civil War means a lot for American people and, besides, it is probably one of the first modern wars. However, your battlefield looks like a pleasure garden compared to WWI sites in France, where the earth still looks mutilated after 90 years...
All the best,

Hi Bulent,
I think that I don't have anything else to increase to speak of the beauty of this picture, because a lot of people already said this, therefore I don't want to be repetitive regarding the capture. But I want to say that besides the wonderful point of view, I was impressed with the way that you caught these light rays that pass through the trees, so well, because in my point of view, it is this light that gives all the force and intensity the this picture. I already tried to catch this light, but up to now I didn't manage to do in a correct way. Maybe, I have not chosen the correct hour to do it. Well done. Best Regards, Consuelo

Hello Professor Atalay,
The morning sun, and the sun ray, it looks like an oil painting. I can feel the fresh air, morning breeze, birds, and a fresh smell of the forest. The forest before your eye is breathing the air as you were. Were you alone? The forest is contemplating, as you were about something, perhaps about the days ahead? After so many people have already commented on your beautiful image. My comments may carry a very little meaning. But, I must say that your photos always teach me many aspect of life, through your eyes.
warmest regards,
Nobu.
