Photographer’s Note
Today, Christian Orthodox people celebrate The Saturday of the Repaused
This Saturday is celebrated twice a year, a day in the spring and one in the autumn, when, after the Holy Liturgy a special service is made for the repaused people, called parastas. In this day usually all churches are full of people that come with a plate of coliva.
Coliva is the traditional meal that is usually prepared in the memory of the beloved deceased. It was first prepared in Constantinopol in the time of Archbishop Eudoxie, when Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), intending to humiliate Christians, ordered the governor to sprinkle blood from the animals sacrificed to the pagan idols over the produce and all other products sold in the markets.
Then Archbishop Eudoxie had a dream of Saint Theodor Tyron telling him to warn Christians not to buy that meal, but to eat boiled grains mixed with honey – that is actually coliva.
Today the coliva is made sometimes with more tasty ingredients, and it is said that the soul of the repaused person was as good as coliva prepared in his/her memory. It is prepared also in the memory of the celebrated saint, this one from the photo was prepared for the feast Saint Panteleimon, 27-th July. After parastas service, where coliva is blessed, people that prepared it share it to the others that attended the service.

Hello Mihaela,
Very nice presentation of this tradition. Your photo has lots of interesting details. I like the woman's hand with the candle in the foreground, the priest reaching out over the table, and the decorations on top of the cakes. Good note, too. :-)

Hola Mihaela,
Me gusta esta escena y como la has compuesto. Quizás hubiera preferido sin el brazo que entra en la parte inferior de la imagen. De cualquier manera está muy bien captada.
Buen trabajo.
Saludos,
Mirari.

Buna Mihaela,
Hi Mihaela,
Great way to capture a very significant moment for Eastern Orthodoxy!
Coliva is actually a very tasty dish, in my opinion it is a pity that it is only associated with grave and solemn events :) English wikipedia article can be found here.

Well, Miha, what can I say?... a shot perfectly suited for this site. A great photo, joined by a very informative note, makes this a superb TE posting. I love the POV and composition, as pointed out by others viewers before me, even though your PP attempt was pretty rough. I learned something from you posting and maybe others did or will too.
I wanna mention that it was very nice to see someone marking a Christian celebration these days when the site was full of halloween photos. Great job!

Dear Mihaela
A very interesting picture and a not less interesting note, thanks for sharing this picture and tradition at TE. There are plenty of details, in particular the interaction of the priest and the woman adds life to your picture. The colors and contrasts are well balanced, the sharpness and DOF - due to the cake line in particular - are perfect. Well done
Best regards
urs
