Photographer’s Note

You can hear them coming down the street. Ever closer. ‘Welcome-comeinside-sitdownplease’ from the waitress in the restaurant three doors away, then finally it’s the turn of the girl who has been sitting by the menu stand next to you:
‘Welcome-comeinside-sitdownplease’.
But the shoppers walk on without a glance, cradling bottles of water and bags stuffed full of cheap clothes.

Many of them are afraid of eating and drinking in Hoi An town ("Oh, you're drinking coffee with ICE?") and prefer the familiarity of their 4-star resorts.

And so she goes back to watching the soap opera on tv and I go back to stirring my excellent iced coffee.

Cool composition and a great note to go along. The mirror frames the girl making this photo almost like a picture of a picture. I wish the image inside the mirror was a little sharper, but it’s not bad. Overall a very interesting photograph. Good eye.

I'm not sure I'd want ice in my drink, but the pho is probably fine, and I'd sure rather eat in this place than in some 4-star resort. I could soak up the atmosphere, the beautiful tropical colors, and I could wonder about the life of the waitress in a country where things are still hard, but with lots of hope for eventual improvement. I like how the mirror shot emphasizes the spare look of the place--just the refrigerator and a few paper items on the wall, and just the girl alone. Nicely seen, Brian. Regards, Ken.

An interesting idea, Brian, to frame a picture within a picture. The colour is fresh and nice and the frame makes a nice composition . It is interesting to look from the reflected world to the real and back again. regards kevin

I like this picture. You had a very smart idea to take it through the mirror. An empty small restaurant, and the girl watching the tv so carefully. A perfect description of a whole world.
