Photographer’s Note
No matter how old you are, playing balls seem to stay a source of fascination to many ... as they were to these men, some of old age, playing endlessly by the lake the other afternoon. I opted to go to the opposite side from where they stood so that I could record both the balls falling on the sand and the men tossing them.

Great timing, POV and yes, a poetic rendering of the happening, the frame dominated by this giant SPLASH that seems to defy age...
Very smart, dynamic photography, dear Sasa.

Men will always be playing balls ;?}
Aside from the fantastic tones...
aside from the compositional elements...
aside from the wonderful, slightly blurry faces...
aside from all this, we have a genuine moment in time here. No pose, no stopping of time because a beautiful woman points her lens. We have a pure moment when movement and texture, leisure and drama, lens and life all combine to truly express photography...those underestimated, underrated slivers of time so quickly forgotten by the fleeting eyes and so casually presented by extraordinary eyes behind a view finder.
Cool.
Chris.

I can only guess how close you set yourself in order to get this image. This is not the casual shot, there is planning and observation behind this one... a classic Sasa...

Took me the longest time to discern everything I was seeing. The sand sort of causes my eyes to break this up into a mosiac and ingest it in bits. Which is a very cool effect. I've spent more time looking at this shot than most. Left it for a bit and came back. And I really like the dynamic between the two guys, one in full follow through, the other in classic "straight man" pose. Great one.

Bravo Sasa! What a funny shot. I was looking at it and, at first I thought that the action was taking place in a beach and that the man was doing surfing :-)) Then, I thought, what is Sasa doing in the beach?!!! ;-)
Excellent capture, so dynamic and full of body gesticulation. The sand splash is fantastic… almost like water… The title is genial!
Big bravo!

Hi Sarolta,
This is so good!
What a timing to catch this moment!
The tiny circles formed by light and sand makes an incredible texture, resembles but is not water, neither ice, just sand! Pretty unusual.
All the attention of the players and women are into the landing ball, it focuses all the attention on that moment.
My compliments and thanks so much to post it.
Best regards,
JM

Hello Sarolta,
Bravo pour cette prise de vue saisie au bon moment ! L'impacte de la boule de pétanque crée une trčs belle gerbe de sabel et l'homme qui la lançé est encore bien visible et est encore dans son mouvement !
Bravo !

Hi Sarolta
Great Timing.
You shoot the picture at the right time when the ball smashed into the sand.
The sand thrown up in the air and the players in the background create a perfect mood.
The note put by you suits the photo very much.

So that's sand and not water! Unbelievable. You're really the best Sasa. What a great pov. Decisions, decisions. Live is nothing about decisions. So is photography. And how come you always make the right ones? You must have a pact with an angel my friend...

Sarolta,
Amazing shot. With all those little balls of light in the air, hanging there like little bubbles, it seems like a dream, or like a still from an old movie, and I imagined that these guys had probably died in some heroic way and this was the films vision of the heaven in which they now resided, rejuvinated, and once again playing like children.

This is really good Sarolta. At first I thought the "throwing man" in the background was a statue but realize now what I am looking at. Great POV!!! A very dangerous position with only an 18-70 on your camera. Composition is superb. The B&W tones in the photo really add to the feeling of...truthfully, I don't know, but they look good. I also like the man just standing behind the man throwing and the onlookers on the right side looking towards you.
...and I agree with Furachan that the big splash creates a really dramatic looking photo.
Great work.
Hope you have good health insurance if you continue to get shots like this. :o)

Excellent Sasa. Perfect timing and an example of where hard, contrasty light can work. The blown out bits of where the sand kicked up add a lot to this IMO. A nice conversion to b&w, I don't think this would have worked all that well in color, and a nice use of DOF too. Well done all around.

Hi Sasa,
That takes a bit of time to actually see what you're looking at! Based on the swimwear they are wearing, I was first thinking about water splashing... Haven't seen a lot of Jeux de Boules lately ;-) and didn't really think about it in Canada. But a nice shot with a welcome explanation! :-)

Hi Sasa,
At first glance, I thought they were water drops, but it's even better. It's amazing your POV about the aged people playing this traditional and international play sport. The sand's dispersion is fantastic, and I like how the sand become a filter emphasizing even more the background, full of life and joy! Really interesting and beautiful!

Angel.

This photo is almost like a ballet, with the moment you get from the old man, in kind of dynnamic balance. And then there is the smashing moment, this harmless explosion of sand, a small second of joy. A magic photo Sasa, very hungarian although taken in Canada.

Hello sasa. Which squirts is water there, - no it is sand. One must look only twice and read the title, in order to know. The astonishing are the old gentlemen. Why do they sit not on a bank and do rest themselves? Thus one expects nevertheless at this generation. In reality I admire these old men and their joy in the play. They can be put into no drawer. In their way they remain cool. That must be able to be broken in the recent generation a new kind of sport. You observed this motive attentively and taken a wonderful photo. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Sasa,
I wish I had more time to critique... but I couldn't let this one go by unnoticed... I love it!
At first I thought it was a water splash, a scene with old people jumping into a pool... now I see what it is, and it feels like a great photo, you are exactly where you should be and clicked exactly at the perfect instant.

Hi Sarolta
You must have been brave to position yourself in the firing line - I hope your camera is sand-proof!! A very creative image, with the movement of the sand giving energy and dynamism, while the man's face is perfectly captured. I love the way the light has caught the sand grains. Wonderful-

You have captured the action at the perfect moment, Sarolta. The ball smashing into the ground, sending up that screen of flying sand, the pose of the thrower, his opponent and the group of watchers are frozen at a moment of wonderful action. The whole effect it wonderfully pictorial too, filling the frame with action and interest. regards Kevin

Marvelous, Sasa!
It was only yesterday when I opened this one
and it instantly reminded me of this one of
yours for some reason - must be the sand particles
filling the whole frame... and then I pictured
yourself half an hour later still sitting by
the bowling ground and cleaning your lens from
sand! LOL
Great angle, closeness, players and their wifes
in the BG, the thrower's pose while waiting to
the outcome of his hit as if he's gonna trip
over and fall any second now... but most of all
what I like here is the sunlight that seem to
unevenly fall around finding its way through the
tree branches.
Great realization and result, so rich and tasteful!
Bravo, Sasa!!!

100 points already... and well deserved! So here is my contribution to this successful photo (Yet another one!). The idea is just brilliant both in nature and its realization! You triggered at the exact perfect time for the sand to explode, and make it look like water! The players are even wearing swimming trunks or shorts... it looks very much like the French game of "Boules".. You keep surprising me sasa!
