This imposing mausoleum, today inserted in the magnificent frame of the Labicano Park (said also Villa De Sanctis), is one of the most precious testimonies of the funerary art existing top-Christian in all the roman area. It came constructed in the years between the 326 and the 330 d.C., second how much attests the bubbles on tiles. E' the great mausoleum , second some initially destined to serve from interment for same Costantino emperor, in which it came instead buried the mother of these, the Sant' Elena Augusta emperor, placed in a sarcophagus in porphyry on which are carved scenes of battle, conserved today in the Museums Vaticans. The dimensions of the mausoleum, to circular plant, are of m. 27,74 of external diameter and m. 20,18 of inner diameter. The height, in origin, was of m. 25,42. In the inferior cylinder it had eight niches, alternatively rectangular and semicircular, di.le which it constituted the income. That one of forehead to the income had to contain the sarcofago of Elena. In correspondence of the niches, in the advanced ring, eight windows to arc were opened. The mausoleo had a cupola cover, whose weight came lightened with the insertion of amphoras (pignatte), today very visible because of the partial landslide of the time. E' just from this particular one that the name of Torpignattara with which has origin is known rudere and that it calls the entire surrounding zone. Abandoned after the translation of the reliquie of Elena in the church of Ara Coeli to the Campidoglio, during the Middle Ages it came used like fortilizio and room. In century XVII it was constructed, to the inside of the sepulchre, a little church dedicated to it knows Marcellino and Peter .


Questo imponente mausoleo, oggi inserito nella magnifica cornice del Parco Labicano (detto anche Villa De Sanctis), è una delle più preziose testimonianze dell’arte funeraria paleo-cristiana esistente in tutta l’area romana.
Venne costruito negli anni tra il 326 e il 330 d.C., secondo quanto attestano i bolli sui laterizi.
E’ il grande mausoleo, secondo alcuni inizialmente destinato a servir da sepoltura per lo stesso imperatore Costantino, nel quale venne invece sepolta la madre di questi, Sant’Elena Augusta imperatrice, deposta in un sarcofago in porfido sul quale sono scolpite scene di battaglia, conservato oggi nei Musei Vaticani.
Le dimensioni del mausoleo, a pianta circolare, sono di m. 27,74 di diametro esterno e di m. 20,18 di diametro interno. L’altezza, in origine, era di m. 25,42. Nel cilindro inferiore aveva otto nicchie, alternativamente rettangolari e semicircolari, una delle quali costituiva l’ingresso. Quella di fronte all’ingresso doveva contenere il sarcofago di Elena. In corrispondenza delle nicchie, nell’anello superiore, si aprivano otto finestre ad arco.
Il mausoleo aveva una copertura a cupola, il cui peso venne alleggerito con l’inserimento di anfore (pignatte), oggi ben visibili a causa del parziale crollo della volta. E’ proprio da questo particolare che ha origine il nome di Torpignattara con il quale è conosciuto il rudere e che denomina l’intera zona circostante.
Abbandonato dopo la traslazione delle reliquie di Elena nella chiesa della Ara Coeli al Campidoglio, durante il Medioevo venne usato come fortilizio e abitazione.
Nel secolo XVII fu costruita, all’interno del sepolcro, una chiesetta dedicata ai santi Marcellino e Pietro.
