The Moody Mansion

The Moody Mansion, located on Galveston Island, Texas, is a 28,000 square foot home designed by William H. Tyndall and completed in 1895 for Mrs Nacissa Willis. Bought by W. L. Moody Jr just days after the 1900 storm from heirs of Mrs Willis, who perished in the storm, it remained home to Moody family members until 1983 when Mrs Mary Moody Northern was forced to leave because of damage caused by Hurricane Alicia. A powerful Texas family, the Moodys built one of the great American financial empires based on cotton and later banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. Mrs Mary Moody Northern passed away in 1986 after which the mansion under went eight years of restoration before opening to the public as a museum in 1991.
