The Council Square

The Council Square, Piata Sfatului, was the meeting place of tradesmen from the Romanian provinces and Hungary with numerous permanent markets including the Oxen Market, the Horse Market, the Fish Market, the Linen Market, the Grain Market, and the Fruit Market. Mureşenilor Street, adjacent to the Town Square, was initially called the Monastery Street, taking its name from the Dominican monastery on its northern side. It was later called Customs Street, for the nearby Customs headquarters in the Gate Bastion at the end of the street. In the Middle Ages, this street was the main access way to the city for merchants and travelers coming from the other Romanian provinces and traveling towards Bran. Prior to entering the old city, Mureşenilor is called Strada Lunga, and remains the main access road into the old city.
Republicii Street, adjacent to the Town Square, was previously called Bucketers’ Street, referring to the large number of bucket makers located there. The street had a canal running through it designed to keep the city clean. The street ended in a gate – the oldest in the city – and from here began the road to Moldavia. Due to this gate, the street bore for a while the name of Purzengasse (Gate Street). The houses on this street were designed to be very strong, with wooden and tin shutters in case invaders somehow got through the Gate.

Info:

The picture was taken a few days after this one from a point located close to the right corner of the Town Hall (also as viewed from here).
The large Gothic building in the background (left) is the Black Church which was built during the 14.th and 15.th century. I will write more about it in one of my next posts when I'll show you a better view of this beautiful building. Here is just a view over the Black Church as seen from the Council Square. I hope you like it!
