Photographer’s Note
The imposing St.Patrick's Cathedral was built in 1850. It majestically stands out in the vast expanse; its steeples reaching out to heaven. Funds were raised from soldiers and well-wishers. The government gave a grant of Rs.2,000/-. The church finally cost Rs.22,000/-. The first mass was conducted by Father Sheehan on 8th December 1850. Ironically, ten days later, the priest died. A marble slab commemorates his sad demise. The chapel was blessed in June 1856 by Bishop Hartmann, Vicar Apostolic of Bombay and administrator of Pune, who gave it the name St.Patrick after the patron saint of Ireland, since the church also catered to Irish troops.
