Photographer’s Note
Another image from our (Shirgold and I) amazing Safari up in the cold wilderness of Kussamo, Finland.
This time though we are with the snowmobiles rather than the dogs.
A bit about snowmobles....
A snowmobile (or snow scooter, often referred to by enthusiasts as a 'sled' and in the Canadian north and Alaska as a 'snowmachine', or as the genericized trademark of 'Ski-Doo') is a land vehicle propelled by one rubber track with ski(s) for steering. They are designed to be operated on snow and ice, and require no road or trail. Most snowmobiles are typically powered by two-stroke gasoline/petrol internal combustion engines. Four-stroke engines are becoming more and more popular in snowmobiles. Summertime occupations for snowmobile enthusiasts can also involve drag racing on grass or even asphalt strips. People that ride them are commonly known as snowmobilers. The three main types of riding are Motocross/racing, trail riding and mountain riding.
Snowmobiles are widely used in arctic territories for travel. However, the small population of the Arctic areas makes for a correspondingly small market. Most of the annual snowmobile production is sold for recreative purposes much further south, in those parts of North America where the snow cover is stable during the winter months. The number of snowmobiles in Europe and other parts of the world is relatively low, though they are growing rapidly in popularity.
The snowmobile market is now divided up between four big makers: Ski Doo, Arctic Cat, Yamaha, and Polaris.
Snowmobiles will beat most stock or aftermarket cars in a 0-100 drag race. An average 2007 snowmobile goes 0-60mph in 4 seconds flat and can achieve speeds in excess of 193 km/h (120mph). (Racing snowmobiles reach speeds in excess of 241 km/h [150mph]).Mountain sleds permit access in remote areas, of deep snow, which was nearly impossible a few decades ago. This is mainly due to improvements in technology.
Certainly a worthwhile experience......those full throttle cuts across the frozen lakes were truly exhilerating!

Hello David,
un vrai plaisir que de voir toute cette neige. En blegique, j'ai juste vu quelques flocons qui n'ont pas tenu bien longtemps.
Une ambiance hivernale vraiment bien rendue, on sent le froid.
Have a great week-end.
Daniel.

Hi David
Great winter shot. Very sharp with the stong color over a white background.
Good repetition with the sleds. Well done.

Hi David,
Those are quite the amazing machines, very space age looking. I like the way the skiis appear to be mounted at the front. Your POV is ideal here, with great dynamism. You managed to control the lighting here very well, avoiding any undue glare from the snow. The two people warm and enhance and I really like the way the machines angle through the frame with the trees laden with snow beyond. A first rate capture, David. All the best.

Hi David,
While I really dislike these infernal machines, the photo is excellent. The snow looks so crisp, I can almost hear it crunch. The long shadows emphasize the great color and detail. HLJ, Pat

Hello David,
A good quality image showing winter activities in a fine scenery. light, colors and sharpness are optimal, well rendered texture of the snow. The BG trees give a sense of depth to your photo.

Hi David,
From dog sledges to snowmobiles. The joy of the winter activities seen through your pictures remains the same. Your angle and framing is excellent. Good combination of human presence, technology and nature.

Hi David,
Beautiful wither wonderland photo with these 3 gleaming machines all in a row. They would be put to good use here in Upstate New York where over 100 inches of snow fell in one week. The fresh snow works well atop the scrub pines seen in this photo.

Hello David
Been going back to finland or just stock photo?
I like the photo a lot, it shows the "nature"(?) of finnish winter transport.
Quality of the shot is great, sharp features and a very crisp finish that makes sure the snow looks like....well....snow...
Thank you for sharing.
