Photographer’s Note

At the Nihon-ji temple there were a huge pile of these jizou-san figures left as offerings. At most temples they have wooden boards called ema which you buy and then write your wish for things such as good health, success in school, etc. (Such as shown here). This is the same concept except they were using these molded plastic figures. A different and neat idea but maybe not so environmentally friendly. I hope they are recycled.

ah... very cool.
The sharpness and clarity of the foreground shows the doll details beatifully, and then the 'blurriness' off into the distance shows the huge numbers of dolls... it almost looks like a rubbish dump!

It's quite funny too, as I have a soapstone (?) carving of a doll that looks almost identical... cept I purchsed mine in the street leading up to Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto!
